Haverhill

Haverhill is the closest station in my namesake city. Amtrak's Downeaster shares the station with the commuter trains of the MBTA. PanAm Railways (aka Guilford) run their freights through the station since this is the main line to Maine.

I passed through Haverhill last week (10th May 2011) on the Downeaster (return trip between Boston and Portland). You would probably recognise this picture taken through the train window.

I am on a long holiday of Canada and the US - travelling mostly by train. Did Vancouver to Toronto by train, then Boston to Washington on the Acelia (high???) speed train, finishing off with the California Zephyr from Chicago to San Fran in about a weeks time.

My nearest one would be Sevenoaks, 4tracks/platforms, Southeastern/First Capital Connect Class 465s, 375s (Southeastern) and 319s (FCC). Occasionally sees Direct rail services Class 37s hauling some nuclear flasks . It also has a carriage siding to the south (used in off peak times) and a Engineers siding to the north (very rarely sees any action). Junction For the Line to Swanley.

I live in the Atlanta perimeter, which means closest to the Atlanta Amtrak station called Peachtree Station. I guess that's what you mean by major, but the issue with Atlanta is that even the Five Points MARTA station is more "major" than the Amtrak station. That station is even closer to me, since it's actually downtown, instead of nearer to Midtown/Buckhead.**

There's talk about a much bigger grander transit hub coming back to Atlanta, which would be nice for the place once called Terminus. I mean, look at the old station on this page. WHOA, that thing had style.

You didn't specify whether the station had to be active or not, so I'll throw one in that's inactive as a station. I'm about 18 miles from Nashville's Union Station. Passenger service ceased in 1976 if I remember correctly and it has since been converted to a hotel and the train shed in the rear has been razed. A real shame. Still a beautiful building anyway.
