your favorite steam locomotive

it is good to see the old '202 protected from the elements in good condition but it would have been nice if she was running again but I doubt it,nice shot!

Well, she's going to. We're hoping for 2012 for her 100th birthday, but at least by 2013. The main thing we need to do is put in new flues and tubes. The ones currently in there were put in sometime in the 80s, and have never been used, but the government will only let us use them for 3 years vs. 20 for new ones. We also need new fire brick, because it was also replaced in the 80s, but with the wrong kind. The whole engine could stand to be taken apart piece by piece and cleaned, and most of it will be. We hope to have her sandblasted and get a good coat of paint on when we're done. We might need new boiler jacketing, or at least partially. The other problematic thing we might need to do is take the drivers off and send them to Strasburg for the lathe. They're not really in bad enough condition that they absolutely need it, but they could use it. The WM completely rebuilt her before putting her in the park (they had planned to run excursions but didn't) so we have basically a brand new engine here.

I have more pictures here

Have you been up to see her before?

No I have not been up there to see her, though she is the last western maryland 4-6-2 pacific, I think she needs to be running like the former 2-8-0 #734 who was a former LS&I engine that is painted in the legendary WM paint with the Fireball logo.

She's the only WM steamer period besides big 6 at Cass. Yes, she does need to be running, and if you paid attention to my post, we're going to.

well,I wish you and others good luck with her restoration and I will look at the video of this legendary steam engine to working order one day but not now!

Yes she does not look bad but with a little work on the firebrick, drivers and other parts, she will be running soon, but there is a problem,Who might be willing to let a 4-6-2 and or another steam engine operate on their tracks,I am worried that might tie up freight traffic and the last thing I would want is to have this beautiful engine go back on static display like she has since her fire was`dropped!:(

D&RGW K-27 class no. 463. I rode behind it on my first trip over the Cumbres and Toltec perhaps ten years ago, and for the next 3 years thought it was the 453...now I believe that either I got it wrong or they had repainted it for a special(not sure on that one--I think they've only redone it as 455, but not as 453). Anyway, I've been back to Antonito to see it in the shop several times, and now it's the next engine they're returning to service! :D
That's what I've heard and seen pictures of. They did that for a video, I think. I also heard that K-27 #464 was repainted for #453, plus, they added the doghouse.
My favorite Locomotive, K-27 #461.
Speaking of which, does #453's Boiler still exist? I heard that it was sold to a lumber company in Durango.

My favorite Steam locomotive is without a doubt the rebuilt Merchant Navy Class 35005 Canadian Pacific. This loco spends a lot of time at the Watercress Line in Hants, UK near to where I live.

Anything that is steam. From Great Britian to the Outback. From China to the USA, I like. Espically if it is dirty and well used!

If i could i'd buy her and run her in my backyard (but i'd need a bigger backyard first:hehe:)

in truth, i like any steam engine, especially american ones. for foreign, i'd have to go with BR 9F, Ivatt 2MT, Ivatt 4MT, Golsdorf 310, and class 52 kreigslokomotive for my top five.

There a one 2-8-8-2 y6a very close to the y6b the 2156 I would love to see this engine back in Virginia were I am at it should be were it was built and from this is one this engine never got the honor it should have. It beats the bigboy in power so this is the strongest steam engine built last one of its kind so sad:(.
