My favourite Steam loco would be GWR 4300 class mogul 2-6-0. No real reason, but I just have a soft spot for these engines.

My favourite Diesels would be the BR first generation DMUs. Same as before, I have a soft spot for these machines. They also look great in their original livery of lined green.

Australian Diesel, especially the EDI/Bombardier tilt trians and 2100 class.
Im biased to those I grew up watching those things get made.
(Anyone envy me living next to a loco factory?)

My favorite locomotives.

Well, here are my faves...

1. Norfolk & Western class A 2-6-6-4
2. Norfolk & Western class Y 2-8-8-2
3. Norfolk & Western class J 4-8-4
4. Pennsylvania Railroad class J1 2-10-4
5. Pennsylvania Railroad class K4s 4-6-2
6. Canadian National class U2G 4-8-4
7. Southern Pacific class GS-4 4-8-4
8. Union Pacific Big Boy 4-8-8-4
9. Union Pacific Challenger 4-6-6-4
10. Union Pacific class FEF 4-8-4
11. Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4
12. Boston & Maine 4-6-2
Diesels
1. Union Pacific Heritage Fleet of SD70aces
2. Pennsylvania Railroad shark nose units
3. Santa Fe warbonnets (any diesel)
4. Nickel Plate Road Geeps
Electric
1. Virginian EL-2B
2. Virginian EL-C

6. TGV
7. Bullet trains in Japan

My Favorite Things

In steam: Not such an easy choice, but I guess that I would pick the Santa Fe 4-8-4 as the top example of grace, speed, and power. For small steam it has to be the Westside Lumber Co. 3-truck Shay. In medium steam, the Pennsylvania K-4 pacific is an obvious choice. For heavy hauling, it would be the C&O Allegheny 2-6-6-6.

In Diesels: Hard to say. Diesels don't seem to have the same personality as steam. Hmm, maybe the shark-nose Alcos? Maybe a nice clean set of PA-1-PB-1-PA-1 engines at the head of a name train... Or, like steam- small=GE 44-ton center cab, medium=low-nose SD-24, large=PRR centipede units.

Electrics: The GG-1 was a classic, but in really large electrics, I vote for the Milwaukee Road Little Joe. In smaller (but still powerful) engines, I go for the NYC RR P-3 tunnel motor- really a workhorse in getting tonnage into and out of New York City.

'Other': Would go to the UP 'Veranda' gas-turbines. Really amazing machines, even though they didn't last.

Same here. If you want to be really specific it would have to be the SP 4449 and the Cab-Forwards

So.. question...

How did the fireman do his job? I have this image in my mind of the poor soul trying to climb to the tender with a bucket.

He road up front in the cab and regulated the pressure from there. From time to time though, he would have to take the dangerous journey back to the tender.

(There was a pipe that connected the tender to the locomotive for fuel purposes.)

So... did it not use coal as a fuel? Were the oil eaters?

Yup, they were all oil burners. That is how they were able to work properly when it came to the firebox which was still at the front.

Okay, i'll "be specific (go Union Pacific" :hehe: { I couldn't resist putting that in}).

Steam-

UP Bigboys
UP Challengers
SP Cab-forwards
E4 Hudsons
UP Baldwin 4-8-2 7002

Diesel/petrol-

E's
Alco Pa's/Pa1's
Baldwin Sharknose
Baldwin PRR Centipedes
NSWGR 44 class (australia)
NSW Tin Hares (rail motors)
UP Aerotrain
UP M1000's
GP9's
UP Gas Turbines
UP Steam Turbines
Any other 1930's to 60's UP loco.

Any steam engine 2-4-0 arrangement. The reason being is, to me, it's the perfect size. Not too big, and not too small.

Steam:

K-28 (NG)
Berkshire (SG)

Diesel:
GP 7,8,9 =) Actually I like almost every geep. I also like some of the SD units.
I HATE F and E units! Not sure why...

Electric:
Don't know enough about them to answer.

GASP! *Has heart attack*.

How could you HATE those beautiful units? I agree with you on the GP9's, but things like GP15's, GP38's and SD units (cadilacs I think)are ugly as heck.

By the way, hate is a very strong word. What about "dislike"?

Ha. Okay okay... I will go with dislike.

I like the rugged look of the geeps... I have never liked the "stream lined" look.

Well, we all like different trains and thats okay.

I absoulutely lOVE streamliners and 1950's american trains. :D
