world war frontline railway

Check the DLS for Stalagluft (or something like that), it's a layout that has plenty of what you may need.

..... Oh, and another suggestion, the lines need to be slightly wonky as they were laid in a hurry.
This is not true. As WW1 was static the majority of the lines were fairly permanent and laid by professional railwaymen to professional standards. If they didn't do this they would have masses of derailments. The trench tramways were however laid quickly and would often need relaying because of shellfire damage. However these lines were hand operated (or perhaps with mules) the steam engines being confined to the rear main supply lines and the petrol tractors being used nearer the trenches. The German feldbahn were even more like civil railways complete with signalling etc.

Some good references for WW1 British ROD light railways, with plenty of pictures are:

Light Railways of the First World War by W.J.K.Davies (1967)
Narrow Gauge at War (1987) and Narrow Gauge at War 2 (1996) both by Keith Taylorson

The first is long out of print and I doubt if the others are still available but in Britain they could probably be obtained through your local library. Also members of the (British) Narrow Gauge Railway Society can borrow them through their postal library service.

And 'railways at war before 1918'. That's a good 'un.

The closer to the front lines, the lighter laid the rails became. And look at any British quarry (for example, the one in Ffestiniog) the rails are so wonky that you wouldn't believe it, and those were laid as permanent rails from the start.

Keep going, and just do what you think looks best.

Oh, and for a loco: http://whr.bangor.ac.uk/msts.htm
scroll to the bottom of the page for trainz downloads, and it's called Baldwin 590.

Sorry to hear about your bad news. Maybe you will get a chance to finish this railway in the future when life is easier for you.
