Windows7 to Windows 10

Get over it
I'm getting ready to make the switch and want to backup my TANE stuff. I'm assuming that I just backup the NV3 folder and I should be ok. Right or wrong? Thanks.

You need to back up the "userdata" folder. That is where all of your content is located. By default on install, it is in the "/users/<your username>/appdata/N3V Games/TANE" folder, but that location can be changed during install. Backing up the program files won't completely guarantee a working install in Windows 10, since the registry entries must also be backed up. To do that, use the "Regedit" app, which can be run by typing "regedit" into the run dialog box (right-click the start button and click run). You must either be running as admin, or accept the UAC warning. Select "computer" in the left pane, then select file>export, type in a name for the backup (leave the default .reg extension), and browse to the location you want to backup to. Be sure you locate any backups on a drive other than the one which contains Windows.

When I migrated from Windows 7 to Windows 10, I did the in-place FREE upgrade. TANE ran fine on Windows 10 right off, but I did a full backup of my data, AND an image of my Windows partition, just to make sure everything worked. Creating a partition image gives you the option to revert back to your old version of Windows, without having to re-install anything. I create these images about every month.

Hope this helps

Free upgrades over. It ended yesterday.
I guess that's all the more reason to do a full backup of all data and your Windows partition before doing any upgrade. I also upgraded my RAM from 8GIB to 16GIB (MOBO max), only because memory prices were low. Increasing memory does allow larger routes to be run without paging to disk. Since I like to create and run very large routes, and do not have an SSD, the RAM upgrade was important to me.

Nope, 29 July 2016. I wish it was over at 29 June as I'm just tired of Microsoft Windows 10 notifications. They are really annoying me

I'm having a hard time trying to find what CP suggested but I have found Local Disk(C) /Program Files/ N3V Games/ Trainz a New Era/ resources. I'm hoping that is what I should backup. Please let me know. Thanks.

If you have a USB external hard drive then do a back up to that, Windows back up works fine.

If you let TANE install the custom content to the default location, it'll be here: C:\Users\<PC Username>\AppData\Local\N3V Games\TANE\<TANE USERNAME>.
I would back up the whole N3V Games folder that's in the AppData\Local. The one in Program Files is just the game files that's needed to play the game. All of your custom content installed, created, etc is in the AppData\Local\N3V Games folder.

Hope this helps you and gives you an idea of what to look for.
Let me know if you need anymore info

To access that folder, you must first select "show hidden files and folders"

John, I do have an external hard drive and I will be use it for my backup but I'm trying to find out exactly what I should backup. I finally got to CP's suggested site but there is no userdate folder/file there. If I place a backward slash \ after TANE I get a dropdown menu with 11 selections but no userdate selection. What file/folder should I bachup? Thanks.

I don't have a win 7 machine around but start TANE, settings tab, under install there should be local data folder. The location from memory varies from installation to installation the idea was you could drop it on an SSD. I'd back up the entire N3V folder, I assume you installed out from under program files?

Word of Warning: 10 does not have "Backup." It has "File History" which is very different and not as comprehensive. For recovery purposes 10 retains the Restore part of 7 Backup and you apparently can retrieve that way, but it might be simpler just to copy your USERDATA\ to a thumb drive or your backup drive.

On the positive side, I have done or supervised eleven 7-to-10 upgrades(?) and have seen no data loss. Trainz 2009, 10 and 12 were unaffected on my two personal PCs.

:B~)

Windows 10 DOES have "Backup", I just typed in Windows Backup, from Start. It says "Windows Backup has not been set up." and to the right of that, guess what...

A blue and orange shield with the title "Set up backup" to the right of it. So, it obviously does have Backup utility.

Far left has Create system image, as one of two items to click on. Create a system repair disc, is the second item.

I wouldn't think they would simply just get rid of backup, and keep a file history only... that is just silly.

Windows 8 didn't but the win 7 backup was added back into Win 10 and you can restore in exactly the same way as you could in win 7 boot from CD etc.
