Windows 8 & Trainz12 with the addition of Trainz10 - is there a conflict?

Saving any files is the LEAST of my worries...
Ive got the uninstall programme loaded, but when I try to uninstall trains 2010, it says it can't do it.
Then it scans for things, and stuff which I know nothing about starts appearing. So what the hell do I do now?
This is starting to make Pistorious's situation look like a walk in the dark in comparison...

Slow down or you are going to be in worse trouble with your son!
EDR is from content manager File > Extended database repair, I seriously suggest running that first, If you uninstall you loose anything that your son has downloaded and created unless you save the local and original folders first.

No need to use a program to uninstall if you are reinstalling TS12 to the same place, a simple delete works and the registry entries will be updated when you reinstall.

If you want 2010 with TS12 install 2010 first, then TS12 as a separate install and as I said earlier copy the ja files etc.

Once it's got the results appearing, click the Select All button, then the Delete button. (and bear in mind my warning in the previous post), then repeat in the following box.

Shane

Shane you need to slow down, his son makes routes therefore has content and probably downloads which need saving first!

Ok.. I'm back. I decided in the event of not knowing what to do, ...that it was best to walk away.
Sadly (for me) I'm back, as I unfortunately don't have the option of leaving it at that!
So, here I am.
I'm going to have a go at doing the extended data base repair. And take it slowly from there.

I know it may seem that I'm a person in a hurry and just wants to do things quickly (but not necessarily the right way).
Can I just assure you all, that I'm not that person.
I'm quite a methodical, quiet, thoughtful Mum. I have a kid with autism, and I want to do everything I can to help him to
play his train simulators (because, and this is the saddest thing) no matter what toys we try and get him to play with, this is
what he likes to do the most. We have every train track you care to ask about. We used to live on platform 3 of Newton Abbot train
station, but these days, he prefers to drive trains instead of hope to see them. So, that's where I'm at.

I don't have a backup, because when I tried to do one (I have a stack of DVD's waiting) it said that it wouldn't fit on the disc and didn't seem
to offer a solution to this. I'd happily make a back up, if only I knew how. And this is where the greatest challenge of all comes in. And it's time.
It's in short supply... So, if I can't do something, and it doesn't seem desperately important at that moment in time, I guess it doesn't get done.
But I doubt I'm the first person to struggle to fit absolutely everything in!

Thanks to you all for your help so far. I will have a go with the EDR now that I know where to find it!
And I will be taking it slowly! :)

Thanks,
I've done the extended database repair, and launched the game.
But no, I'm afraid to say that the saga isn't over yet!
I was booted out of the game pretty much instantly.

So, where shall I (slowly) go from here?

ok, I've now managed to locate the download files from trainz 2012 on my computer, and put them onto 2 discs.

I've read and re-read everybodys posts, and I'm really stuck.

Malc, you helpfully wrote:
It can be done but by using the procedure recommended by N3V, install 2010 as a stand alone, copy the ja files from built in 2010 to built in TS12, add 2010 serial number to TS12, run an EDR.

And I'd be inclined to agree, ...if I had the foggiest idea what you mean! :-)
So, in very simple terms, can I now just right click on trainz2012 on the desk top, hit delete and then go to the discs I have now created and install from them? (the 2010 trainz came on a dvd, so I haven't got to worry about the files for that).

thanks again for your help everyone, it's very much appreciated.

It's a bit trickier than that, I'm afraid.

Firstly, I would advise the following:

1.Right-click the Trainz 12 shortcut on the desktop, then use Open File Location (Vista/7/8) or Properties > Shortcut > Find Target... (XP)
2.Drag the UserData folder from there to the desktop (dragging is a case of clicking the folder whilst keeping the left mouse button down, then moving the folder to it's intended location, then letting go of the mouse button).
3.Wait for that to complete.

Once this is done, you can then use Revo Uninstaller to complete the job - I have a tutorial for this at http://trainz.shaneturner.co.uk/tutorials/index.php?page=how-to-remove-trainz-using-revo-uninstaller.

After Revo has done it's job, you can then reinstall both versions.

Shane

oh heck. I thought I'd been left to my own devices to figure it out.
So, about 10 mins ago, I deleted them both by right - clicking and selecting delete (I thought that was what Malc had suggested was ok to do)
and then going for a reinstall. I tried Trainz2010 first (as recommended by all) but it said after trying to load it that it had errors.
So, I'm head in hands about to either cry, or reach for a stiff drink. It could go either way...

First rule of computing is don't panic, Find the recycle bin, click the icon, find the trainz icon right click on it and select restore, that should stick it back where it was, should then be able to follow Shanes instructions.

By delete I meant delete the programs folder and contents which you would need to use explorer for or whatever Win8 calls the file manager now, all deleting the icon does is delete the shortcut to the program, no real damage done.

Hi Malc, Shane and other contributors,
thanks for your help yesterday. It wasn't one of my happier days spent trying to resolve
train simulator difficulties, and I'm operating under more challenging circumstances that I suspect
most people around here (not least, because my interest lies in success, (measured by whether it's working or not) rather than enjoyment, and I was getting very little of either!!)
So, I have been working through the night to reinstall, as the files that I saved, came up with an error and I didn't know how to fix that, so I started right back at the very beginning by downloading everything from scratch (having got rid of everything using the programme you recommended Shane).
I now have managed to achieve both games appearing on the computer... as separate files.
But, trainz 2010 is the 42203 build, and it says it needs updating. I have attempted to install the patch, but it refused saying 'failed to extract the patch archive - patching aborted.
I have tried several times, but get the same result each time...

I don't know what to do. I'm tempted to just ignore it, but I sense that isn't the answer either...
thanks,
jo

Thanks Fran1, I'm still confused though, ...those links look like they are something to do with TS2009, but I can't work out where to go for TS2010. Sorry to be such an idiot. I daren't just do it, on the basis, that yesterday my world became very messed up on account of 'just trying to do something...' and 24 hours after thinking it would be alright to install an older version of a game I'm still in trouble. So would you mind just clarifying for me, that the patch for TS2010 is one that suggests it's for TS2009?

And Shane, thanks. But what the heck is the multiplayer beta? I know a bit about the word beta, on account of having windows 8. I found out that it was a beta programme, but that wasn't until it totally crashed and I spent 8 days of my life watching the people at Microsoft headquarters operating my computer remotely, seemingly as clueless as me as to what to do about it. Eventually they wiped the entire computer clean. So, I'm nervous of anything that has the word Beta attached...!

thanks both,
jo

Scroll down the list, you want 42203-44088, download to desktop and patch from there.
Don't bother with multi player you have that in 2012.
