Windows 10 Preview

At least they learned from the past failure Windows OS.

They brought back the Search pane, and the desktop icon start screen.

One of the worst abominations (asside from animated speed twees), was when the previous MS OS was radically developed by some Fwench wise guy (who got fired) was because everybody hated the stupid Tile App screen.

Everyone had to go to an external site to download a Start Screen app ... What were they thinking ???

That's when MS really lost the plot. I went and bought a Start Screen addon (I refuse to call it an app!). It also includes a multi window approach where you can create multiple virtual screens and just drag the one you want into view. I see Win 10 is going to include something like that.

App type screens are good for iPhones, iPads, tablets and other mobile devices. Desktops are best for those who need or want to be productive such as businesses, professional folk or those of us comfortable with most any operating system. Just give us a desktop that we can configure the way we want it to look.

Where does this Fwench guy hail from? Newly founded country?

One of the very few times I came into contact with Win8 was helping my boss figure out how to shut down his new laptop. Yup.
When your users have to Google "how to turn off my computer", you know you've done a fine job of intuitive UI design.

Personally I enjoyed using Windows 8. Yes I needed a start menu replacement and I am not a fan of the tile viewpoint, or the apps... I do however enjoy the performance benefits over previous iterations. A 10% gain in CPU performance with synthetic benchmarks with just a software change, yes please! Changing a few things to have it as usable as Windows 7 was not too much of a bother so I can't really complain.

I don't plan on moving to 10 until any known bugs have been fixed however, perhaps service pack 1. Or 10.1...

They say if something takes looking around to find the great features then there's something wrong with the design. :)

The quickest way to shutdown Windows 8.x is to click on the desktop somewhere and press ALT+F4. This brings up the standard shutdown menu we've had since Windows 9x.

The alternate is to right-click on the start menu icon, at least in Windows 8.1, which has the option in there to shutdown or sign out.

How did I find this? I Googled for it. :)

This is a joke isn't it? :hehe:

Paul

I was joking, yes, but now that I think about it, I wouldn't put it totally past the Brew Crew to do something like that.

p.s. How about the hair on that Microsoft guy in the video? Surely that was a joke.

hold down Windows Key + "R" for run, type "shutdown -s -t 1 -f" without the quotes, that will force a shutdown in 1 second.

I'm surprised that would work unless you were using PowerShell with the appropriate authorisation. I did look up the command and I see you can change the shutdown time, the seconds after -t, to 315360000 which means it will shut down in 10 years. Those clever MS folk think of everything! :hehe:

I have installed the Win 10 Tech preview - no problems - everything is as it should be all apps and program settings working and Trainz runs just as well as it did with Win8 / 8.1 - I did put it on my spare computer not the "Trainz Super Computer" naturally! Would die if it failed.
You can use the GUI interface almost the same as with Win7 only with Win8 /8.1 flat look.

Just put windows 10 in my virtual box, and got an invite for the T:ANE (pre)beta so if I get time tomorrow I'll load the beta into 10 and see how it works. No I will not revel anything other than if it works.
I also try putting 12 into 10 and see what happens.

No luck the virtual machine does not have enough access to the real hardware. Also the virtual machine has some of it's own drivers and will not allow the hardware drivers to be installed.
