Win7

Hello whitepass,
Is that open to anybody or just United States of America only?
I doubt that it applies to the EU. My son tells me that the EU version will not include IE and Media Player because of the ongoing spat between Microsoft and the EU and will probably be even more expensive than it usually is over here.

The price doesn't look too bad for here (£49.99 against $50 - the same old conversion £1=$1 regardless of exchange rate). My son is half right at least; IE8 is missing although this isn't a problem.

The difference is that the US ?canada offer is an upgrade, the EU offer is a full license.

Might be worth while checking the euro price.

I have looked at this and as I understand it you have to preorder through one of the named stores? In the UK you can't do it online, is this correct?
Another question , the W7 compatibility software says that the Creative Xfi Extreme Gamer sound card is not compatible, but the Creative site shows W7 drivers. Has anyone with this card tried W7? John.

All of the stores listed have online shops. Personally I prefer my OS software to be delivered to me on a DVD via snail mail so I have a "verified" copy always to hand. Note that W7 as offered is a reinstall of your OS not an upgrade so you will need the OS on a DVD anyway.

With regard to the lack of IE8 - yes this is due to some EU legal ruling on "anti competition" type issues between the EU and Microsoft. So thanks to our bureaucratic "friends" in Brussels we are going to get W7 with no browser at all - which means that we are all going to have to go to the extra trouble of installing one from CD/DVD or whatever! Make sure you get the browser of your choice copied onto external media before installing W7!

Hi John. I am running Win7 X64 with this card. Used the creative 64 bit drivers, which intalled ok from memory. You don't get the nice looking control panel (not sure if the 32 bit version has the nice control panel) with these drivers but all the options are available. I have had no problems once I got it all sorted, which wasn't difficult mainly just getting my head around the different look. :)

I have had a look at PCWorld and Currys and there doesn't seem to be any mention of this offer yet! Maybe by July 15th. John.

What I meant was you can't preorder on the MS site?. John.

John,

I can't see anything on the MS site (even anything carefully hidden) that allows you to order it from there.

Quote from the MS Site:

"You can pre-order Windows 7 Home Premium E for £49.99** or Windows 7 Professional E for £99.99**. The offer is available through participating retailers. Each retailer will tell you how to get your copy when Windows 7 is released."

I'm assuming this means you can only get it through the retailers although when it is released in October you may actually find that the retailer gives you a link to a Microsoft site to download it!

All ordering seems to be via a list of vendors on the announcement pages. None from Microsoft itself.

This raises a question: Currently using XP-SP3. If you switch to Windows-7 as your only operating system, and you also preordered the final version, will you be allowed to use the pre-ordered upgrade? Or will you be told you have to have Windows XP running to use it? The other possibility is that even with Windows-7 as your OS, you may be able to insert the Windows-XP disk #1 as verification that you are upgrading from a legitimate product. In this last case I would guess that you will need to uninstall Windows-7 and thus end-up with the clean install that Microsoft requires anyhow for XP users.

You could check this out on one of the (many) Windows 7 forums that have sprung up recently. Google "windows 7 forum".

If you "upgrade" the Vista 64-bit to W7, you'll have to do a fresh install. The W7 install will keep your currently formatted drive copy your previous operating system (Vista) to a folder called Windows.old. Everything you have is intact in that folder and the OS is a clean install. You can then reinstall your applcations once you are sure that they are working fine.

The caveat here is once W7 is installed, there's no going back to Vista without reformatting your hard drive.

I do have to add that I am currently running the W7 RC1 Ultimate 64-bit with no problems what so ever. TS2009 installed and runs well. I installed it with the usual Administrator rights. I can add too that the program runs much smoother and faster under W7 than it did when running under Vista Ultimate 64-bit.

Thanks for that John, though I have no qualms about doing a completely clean install of W7, I often have a clear out of the system when things become a little congested!, it is nice to know that it can be done as you say. My only concerns are compatibility of my present software, printer and scanner drivers for example. When I upped to Vista 64bit I had to scrap my Zone Alarm Pro and go for AVG Internet Security because ZA had not caught up with 64bit! John.
