TS2010 is a significant improvement over TS2009_SP2. The rendering of Trees for example;
In TS2009, Native mode, you had that huge alpha channel surrounding a lot of the trees. This made for very odd trackside views of trainz.
This is completely gone in TS2010 native mode.
There are definitely performance improvements as well. On my system (listed in my sig), which is not the latest (5yrs old), I am getting better performance in 2010 than I did in 2009_sp2.
I don't play much with built-in routes, as I am mainly a route designer. I am working on a very large route (about 150 miles) and find TS2010 to be a lot more stable than 2009_sp2.
For example, I am editing a lot, and 2009 used to crash sometimes while doing a lot of editing. I would lose all my edits since the last save.
TS2010 has not crashed once yet! I have been running 2010 since the day it was released, and have been working on my route ever since.
Yes, there are some compatibility issues with content. You may find content that used to work in TS2009 that no longer works in TS2010.
That is partly due to Auran trying to upgrade the quality and performance of play in Trainz. Some of the old content just cannot handle the new rendering and file structure.
For example, .pm files are no longer supported. TS2010 needs .im files. You can convert .pm to .im using a 3rd party tool that is free, and easy to use.
Sure, you may have to do some tweaking, especially with older content. But look for the content with updates available, and download all updates.
Sometimes it's just a matter of removing obsolete fields from the config file for content. I have been doing this in Content Creator.
Generally, I think you will like TS2010, but have to be patient for content updates.
It certainly does have the capability of handling a lot more detail than any previous version.
Considering that I paid only $31 USD for TS2010, it was a no-brainer. I always like to have the latest version of my favorite games and apps.
Now I just wish I could afford to get the latest Microsoft Office, or Developer software<g>
BTW, I'm running TS2010 on Windows 7 Ultimate. It runs great; no problems.
You may need Admin privs to install any game on Windows 7 though.
