Who has issues with his/her routes when editing and using save as option?

Hello,

When editing my routes - I open the session for editing and after changes have been done, I use the save as option.

For ex Routram250414a. If I would do another change today, I would again open the session for editing, do the changes, use save as, but the route name would become Routram250414b, the session name would be the same as before.

But for some unknown reason, when I re-open the session, a part of the work has disappeared.

Could it be due to the use of my saving method?

Hello Kurt,

Trainz doesn't work logically like other software - but I'm sure you kinda suspect that by now. When clicking "Save As", Trainz assumes you want to create a new route, even if you're overwriting the same route, Routram250414 for example. So if you did some work in the Session layer, say traincars or trackmarks, they would not carry over because the session is "stuck" with the old route not the new one.

Unless you're creating a newer version or any such derivative of your route, just use "Save".

I never use any save except 'Save As' and use exactly the same naming convention as the OP. I never allow Trainz to overwrite an existing save - sooner or later it will crash while saving and there goes the lot. Using the system the OP and I use, nothing is lost except an hour or twos work. Also like the OP I never load anything except the session, so the problem is not in the methodology.

Try opening the session and merging the session layer with the route layer...

Thank you for your replies.

When using my method - open the session for editing - I also noticed when using save as and giving the route another name, the session has all the changes, but the new route hasn't.

Here are some screenshots of what happened to a test route.

After closing trainz and restarting the same day and open the session for editing

I have had this situation with other larger routes.

I also checked if hardware was causing it, but none of the used tools showed hardware failure. I'm also comparing several small UPS systems, in order to buy one very soon

G'day, I have been working on several old route in TS12 and I do all route editing in the route and session editing in the session and don't have any problems, I can run the route with quick drive and everything is there, I can even safely delete the sessions and there are no problems.
Just my methodology if it's for the route open the route and work there and if it's for the session open the session and work there. Works real good for me.

Hi Kurt and all,

As we know this is due to the clumsy implementation of layers, and I still consider this one of the many unresolved bugs or "features" if you want to call them that.

To get around this issue, I do all track and relations, building and object placement, and texturing strictly on the route layer. When I save, I press CTRL+S and choose do not create a session.

This prevents the multiple default sessions which appear when doing the overwrite process. If they had a creation date in the Trainz menu, we could manage to figure out which one isn't the imposter, but otherwise it's nearly impossible.

Once I've built my route, I create my sessions in the Create/Drive Sessions menu option off the Trainz main interface. There I do the usual, place trains, configure portals, etc.

This isn't an elegant solution, but it got me around those multiple sessions and missing data.

I lock the platform on the route layer, then use another layer to move benches, lights, and other objects into place. If I find everything is to my liking, I merge the station-stuff back into the route layer. Overall I have found you have to be really careful because once you create a new layer, and haven't merged it, Trainz Surveyor wants to use that name from then on so you'll end up with a bunch of stuff you don't want on the new layer. Very confusion, and quite frustrating!

Have you ever used layers with different weather conditions? Are you still using TRS10 or is everything done in TS12?

Never used the save as unless I wanted to experiment with something on the route which I knew might mess it up. Ive always saved and overwrite the old session and route. Some things are stored in the session and if you open only the route you wont get any of those things to appear. My back up of the last worked on route is saved to CDP via CMP and if anything did happen it is just a case of re-import the CDP.

Thank you for the extra info. I have another route - also created with Transdem - and only the track and some roads are available. I don't know if I will install it in TS12 and continue from there. My TS12 version is build 58414, but I also had issues with it, more than in Trs10.

This route is smaller, and here I will try different weather conditions - but my other route has a higher priority.

I will give your backup method a try ( which is faster ). I normally backup the complete folder structure ( now it takes approx 1 hour ).
