Who actually owns my computer ??????????

BLACKWATCH

Mechanical Engineer
Why is it that now I have installed 2010 & the Hitler/Musselini/Stalin/Thatcher control system called CM3.3, I now
have NO control over what is installed & occupying memory space on MY computer ????????

In Cm3.3 I have numorous items that are 'OBSOLETE', I have downloaded (from N3V's own site) the updated version
of said items, but even though N3V knows this, I still can't delete the 'OBSOLETED' item from MY hard drive, because ....
.... "it's a built in item", this is STUPID with capital letters & unbecoming of a "Professional" business.

I can 'Disable' them, but not 'Delete' them, which means I have to give 'RENT FREE' room to files I do not need, plus
they clutter up most searches I do.

So to re-iterate my original question ...................................

............... WHO ACTUALLY CONTROLS MY FFFFFF.................. KING COMPUTER ???????????

You do. You have the choice to uninstall the offending product. At least it's not like many if not the majority of modern sims and other products, where that's not the case.

I believe obsolete items that are not built-in get deleted. As for built-ins, well, that's why they're called "built-in" - because they are built-in to the game and cannot be deleted. I understand this is because some assets my depend upon a specific version of an asset, even if it's an older version you wouldn't want to build a new route or asset with.

I have no idea how much disk space all these obsoleted built-ins take, but I don't believe it's a lot - maybe a gigabyte or so. Compare this to X-Plane, which requires a "key disc" as a part of copy-protection. You can use a disc image rather than keep one the drive all the time, if you don't mind wasting 8.5Gb of hard disk space to play a sim you paid good money for. And, many if not most modern sims, applications and products are far, far more intrusive than that...

But surely, with a program like 'Trainz', it's not beyond concievable to add a button that hides any 'disabled' & obviously unwanted items.

Once an item has been superceded & replaced, why does it need to be included in any search ??????????

Yes, I have hard drive space to spare, but WHY does this flotsam NEED to exist in any form or shape ?
If we have any problems, we can always download it again, do you keep a copy of 'Windows 95' on your machine "JUST INCASE" ?

I doubt it.

That's the point, I DON'T, I want to delete the "offending" out of date items that have been superceded by better stuff
from other creators, but N3V won't let me.

There is a flag that could be used to do this, though I don't know if it works with built-in items. That said, this may well be one of those things the developers didn't think about, or figured there were bigger things to worry about.

Well give us a clue then, it might be worth a try, if you know something, at least share it, a hint without
a link is worth nowt.

I don't remember what it is; all I know is that it's a config.txt file tag. It's probably on the wiki or the CCG. I believe BlueSkyInteractive used some of these tricks on their assets. Plus, I think there's more than one way to accomplish this, to hide an asset even more deeply, but I haven't really needed to do this so I haven't investigated it.

But by judicious use of the CM search filters you can hide any assets you don't want to see.

Example 1:

Location Download Station
Obsolete False
Out of Date False
And NOT
Keywords dlsstuck

Save this and it becomes a custom filter with a TAB in CM Main View. This is given a name. I call it DLS - ALL NOOD. (NOOD=NOT OBSOLETE OR OUT OF DATE)

The first three ensure that DLS hosted obsolete and Out of Date assets, which you can't download anyway, are not visible.
The last two are a custom filter that you can populate that few people are aware of. One of the few things you can do to assets with DS against them is RMB Edit Keywords. Use in conjunction with File Backup asset Keywords. There are a small number of assets on DLS that CM cannot download, plus I use this for any troublesome DLS assets that crash CM to deskstop.

Example 2:

Location Local
Obsolete False
Out of Date False
Minimum build version 1.3
AND NOT
Minimum build version 2.9
AND NOT
Saved filter w_locked
AND
Name

A slightly more complex saved filter that limits the local, including builtin, assets you see to those less than TB 2.9. Come 1 Sep 2012 this will be the next N3V life cycle policy milestone. If you are a creator then only items TB 2.9 or above will be able to be uploaded to DLS. If you are repairing items then it ensures you are looking at only those items that might be candidates for upversioning.

The w_locked filter works the same way as the dlsstuck filter. You apply this keyword to all 453 assets with the locked icon, which you can't modify anyway. The AND Name portion allows you to add additional filter criteria without the need for another custom filter. For instance:

Replace

AND
Name

With

AND
category rolling stock

limits the view to just rolling stock.

Replace with

AND NOT
Faulty

would show you just the faulty (red flag) assets that need repair in this selection.

Here's a filter so that you don't have to be bothered visually by obsolete and out of date builtin assets:

Example 3:

Builtin True
Obsolete False
Out of Date False

Final example from over 100 custom filters I use for CONTENT MANAGEMENT

Example 4:

Location Local
Obsolete False
Out of Date False
Category Fixed Track
AND
Name Turntable

would limit your view to local, including builtin, assets with turntable as part of their Name (tag username) that are not obsolete or out of date.

Search filters are a very powerful tool for managing assets in Trainz and well worth the effort to learn how to use them.
Instead of worrying about assets you don't want that you can't get rid of; Hide them.

Location Local includes Builtin so to see what installed obsoletes are cluttering up your database:

Obsolete True
Location Local
Builtin False.

CM does not automatically delete local obsoletes. You would have to

Select All
Delete.

However, be aware that most of the local obsoletes are the outcome of a quirk in the obsoleting process.
If you have the upversion of the obsoleted asset in your database, then deleting the obsolete asset locally will move it to DLS - OBS and with the filter in my previous post no longer bothers you, UNLESS it is a dependant asset.

CM compares your database with the DLS index that is downloaded daily (.gz file). Your database list is determined by what is the sum of all config file kuid-table containers. If any of these are legacy assets then that is likely to be the original dependant assets, not any updated assets. Currently, CM cannot determine whether a required dependant is obsolete until it starts downloading. It then knows whether or not you have the latest asset version, which is the one the game uses. I have the complete DLS downloaded. For a current total database of 224,189 assets I have ~2,300 local excluding 878 builtin obsoletes.

Now this seems to back me up, you guys have been using CM longer than me (a lot longer in some cases), and if you
can't agree, what hope Have I got after just a week or three ?

Maybe if TS2010 came with a proper manual, it would be easier, but the manual I got with my disc, gave
just 2 pages (inc. the pics, so 1 actual page) to CM.

I've heard that the thing to do is get the "extended 2006 manual', which so far I have not been able to trace.

That link would be ok if it had a section that dealt with the problems I have.

For instance, the class 37's that are based on Pikkabirds 'Base 1', all worked
very nicely in 2004, but now 'Base 1' throws up a red warning, something to
do with 'bluestar_plough' & 'bluestar_rno' are not permitted in container 'traincar', I followed
some advice I found on this forum & deleted the offending lines in the config. but all that
did, was throw up warnings on all the loco's that used it.

I don't make content because I can't get to grips with the in's & out's of the proccess, so
trying to understand 'Content Creation' is out.

I used to be able to fix things in 2004, but the old ways don't seem to relate to CM3.3. :(

Stop talking ****... And stop talking **** about Stalin... He was better man than Obama, much better but worse than Lenin. He have nothing to do this. What a hillarious stupid forum. And no, your computer is public property, government can take it any time they wish to, no matter where you live.

I'm not saying you're stupid (like most users of this forum probably are), you just shouldn't blame men who are dead long time ago... I agree Hitler and Mussolini wasn't the best of the best but they have nothing to do with your computer. One that you can blame is N3V... It's them who made the game and you who own it, so better to patch things up that way.

Just because he mentions the name Stalin you go off the deep end into some rant about Stalin???? O.o And that most of us on this forum are probably stupid? O.O
As far as a better man then Obama..EHH not sure they both suck/sucked. Hitler and Mussolini were also bad leaders overall. Smart in some areas, but SERIOUSLY lacking in others...Much like Obama and much like Stalin....
But the question still remains....he says the name Stalin and you go off into a rant?:hehe:

If I were your computer, speaking personally, I would annex the Sudetenland.

It's because Stalin for some reason is turning to be respected here in Kazan (for good reasons) against the corruption. A study showed around 40% of young people would vote for him. In fact all the blablabla that communist is bad is just western propaganda. (NOTE: IF HE WAS ALIVE)

I wouldn't really like to be ruled by Stalin, but Putin is not any better. Politics are disgusting but I don't really like to be remninded of Stalin every single meter I go.

The reason I said most of the members are stupid is because... Well their behaviour, for them cold people piracy is more important than peoples lives.
