Where to put downloaded (third party) assets

Sorry, but I am kind of an idiot when it comes to computers. I have downloaded a couple of locos from Jointedrail, but I don't know where to put them. Can somebody help? I have the zip files downloaded but I don't know what folder to put them in. I have TS 12 installed in its own folder (C:/TS12), but where do they go from there?

Thanks.

Well first I would open Trainz and import the files. You can do that by opening Content Manager, Import Content, finding and clicking on one or more cdp files you've downloaded.

I'd also save a copy of the cdp files somewhere else in the unlikely event you have to rebuild one day.

To add on to that, you'll need a program to extract the .zip file, to get the CDPs contained within. Zip Gnius and 7Zip are just two programs that can be used.

More specifically, when I click on download on the website, where do I go from there? Where is the best place to put the files? In my TS12 folder? If so, where in the TS12 folder should they go?

I have the "zip files" downloaded. When extracting the files, where should they go? Windows 8 wants to make a folder called "C:\Users\Connel\Downloads\ (the name of the asset being downloaded)..."
Is that where they should go, or should they go into my TS12 folder where my game is installed?

You were forewarned you were dealing with an IDIOT !!

Thanks.

Save them to your download folder, (to find) open the folder thing next to the microsoft start button, look top ish left.
Once downloaded if it's a cdp you can import using 2012 cm, if it's a zip file drag it to desktop and extract the file then import it.
If you can follow that your not a complete idiot, your only part way there:eek:

You posted again, I didn't think I'd read that before.

You probably do NOT want to put them into your TS12 folder. There is 'work' to do with those files in order to get them into Trainz. You will want to create a temporary folder to put things in when you first download from the site - eg. create C:\JR and download the files there. Then, since they are Zip files, you will need to use something to unpack the compressed files from the Zip (as noted in Post #3). Unpacking the Zip files will usually create a new folder below the folder the Zip is in, so if you download JRStuff.zip and put it in C:\JR and then unpack it, the CDP file(s) will most likely be in C:\JR\JRStuff. Once you have unpacked the CDP files from the Zip, you will need to use Content Manager to import them (as noted in Post #2).
Once you have imported the CDP into Trainz and have checked to make sure it is installed as a local asset, everything in C:\JR isn't really needed anymore, unless you want to hold onto it in case you need to reinstall.

Hope this helps.

Just saw post #5. If you let Windows 8 unpack them to "C:\Users\Connel\Downloads\ (the name of the asset being downloaded)...", that is where you will browse to when you are looking for the CDP when using the Import Content function in Content Manager.

Note - the Import Content function takes the information packaged in the CDP file and installs it into your local Trainz database. Once it is imported, it isn't necessary to keep the CDP file or the Zip file - Content Manager will have copied all of the info into the 'right place' in your C:\TS12 folder structure. You can delete the Zip from the downloads folder and you can delete "C:\Users\Connel\Downloads\ (the name of the asset being downloaded)..." folder if you want to and it won't hurt Trainz.

Here's step-by-step instructions. :)

1. Download the files form the site to whichever folder you want.
2. If there are any ZIP files, extract them to the same place.
3. Open Content Manager via the Launcher.
4. If its your first time doing this, open the CM settings, go to the Miscellaneous tab and make sure the checkbox is ticked for Automatically Commit When Installing CDPs, and UNtick it for Enable Hardware accellerated Texture Compression.
5. Drag the CDP files into the main window.
6. Download any dependnecies fom the DLS you may require for the asset to work.
7. Enjoy your new content!

If it doesn't show up, check the content for errors. JR stuff shouldn't have any.

You don't need to put anything inside the Trainz folders themselves.

Hope this helps.

Kieran.

Uh oh....I did put some into the TS12\builtin\asset libraries folder. What did I screw up when I did that? RFAX, your info is dead-on...once I let them go to whatever folder Windows wanted, I found them and got them.

Thanks.

You didn't screw up anything. It's not necessary to put anytihng inside the Trainz folder, but it does no harm.

Don't download files to Windows default download location. It's buried too deep in users menu and too hard to find. Open Windows explorer. Select your C: drive and right click, select new/folder from popup menu. Type 'downloads'. All downloads go into that folder. Easy to find. I have done this since Windows 3.1.
