Where does the Data Go?

Hello All,

I am a relative newcomer to Trainz and have started adding routes and downloading the required additional content. When I chase down a kuid at a site other than the DLS I end up saving the CDP and then adding it with the Content Manager. I still have the copy of the original CDP for a back up.:)

If I go to the DLS and pick a route along with all its required assets, or if I add a route without asssets and then open Content Manager those assets can be added automatically. But where do they go??

After a time I hate to rhink about all the added content that is residing on my HD and what it would take to restore it. I sure would hate to go thru the whole download process again! So I would like to maintain a back up.

Can I get some advice?

Thanks,

Paul G.

In TRS2006 the "Local" file is the only file to back up to a DVD-RW disc ... however in TS10 there may be a secondary file that also needs to be backed up ?

Following is how to get a route {session(s) optional} and all the dependencies over to your backup drive in 2010. Other trainz versions may be different.

In CMP:
1. If you want only the route and all the dependencies you downloaded for it open the pick box on the left.
2. Drag the route to the pick box.
3. Right click the route in the pick box and select add dependencies.
4. Right click and select all, then add dependencies.
5. Repeat step 4 until no more dependencies can be selected.
6. Right click and select show in main list or press the button.
7. Set your filter to built in= false.
8. Right click in main list and select all.
9. Right click and select save to cdp.
10. Give it a name of your choice and location.
Depending on the amount of assets it may take some time to create the cdp.
Done!

If you want the route and session(s) saved follow the above but drag both the route and session(s) to the pick box per step 2. Skip step 3.

If you only want the session(s) saved follow the above but right click and remove the route each time step 4 is done.

If you check the Trainz2010 folder tree you see several sub folders one of which is called User Data. That is where the downloads and third party assets reside. They are not stored as CDP files. They are data files with various combinations of letters and numbers. You can open the User Data folder yourself and look around. Just don't move or change anything or you risk having to do a re-install. A good practice would be to back-up the User Data folder on a regular basis, preferably to a different drive or USB thumb drive large enough to hold the data. You can also save the individual CDP's to another location. I do this with payware, so if it gets messed up or lost in a crash, I still have a copy available. Welcome aboard Paul and enjoy the ride.

Thanks Guys.

Both pieces of information were very helpful.

Tom, browsing the folders I see now all that content. I will back that folder up to my external drive. I didn't realize that the CDP is actually more or less Trainz form of a zip file.

Mike, I went thru the process you described and created a CDP. It went without a hitch. I haven't tried to import it back into Trainz, but, short of a bug in Content Manager, I can't imagine why it wouldn't work. I will try it eventually.

Now I have two options to backup my content. It's too bad there isn't a comprehensive book on the program that covers all of this in detail. But thankfully there are good guys like you on a forum like this to help out.

Thanks again for the help!!
