When the Deltic retired, I never expected this...

It is great to see the Deltic back in its full glory, but as wholbr said, sadly it won't be around for long.

These were great engines and better than some of the rubbish we have imported over the years, the noise of these beasts was scary as it passed, but it was all power.

You are so very right there Joe in what you state. To see the old Deltic back in full service is a truly great site. However in another sense it is a sad sight as it demonstrates the rail industry is not able at present to satisfy the needs of its present and prospective new customers.

I for one would like to see a whole new generation of rail diesel engines carrying the logo of such producers as Scania, Man, Renault and others who have the ability to put their knowledge, design skills and proven reliability into the production of those locomotives

I would also hope and would love to see rail freight liners, Tautliners, chill containers and freezer rolling stock on the rail carrying the names of Tesco's, Sainsbury's, Morrison's and other giants of the retail trade.

The above would demonstrate that the British rail freight industry has not only had a great past, but now has a great future playing a real role in the transport industry of this century.

It can now happen, so let all us Trainzers look forward not back. Let's look to a rail industry with new commercial players and a " can do" attitude. Let us look at the rewards for the rail industry and not argue about problems that can and will be overcome. As one very famous American once said " I have a dream today"

Hello WEN,

Hmmm, no........:hehe::hehe::hehe:

Cheerz. ex. :wave:

Yes, I know, I messed the statement right up as I ended up talking about hp not tw and don't ask about tractive effort as I honestly can't remember or know offhand. What I am trying to get at is suitable locomotives that are adequate to do the job. the only concern is, 55022s reliability except in the short term, that doesn't matter. otoh, decisions are far more complex, price is another factor, training, etc..

I know exactly what you were trying to get at Russell, don't worry. You're still as keen as mustard on the old railway knowledge.

55022 unlike a lot of 66s has a whole group backing it so it may be more reliable due to the amount of sopport it has.

Its great that Martin who owns 22 is at last getting some return from his loco even if its freight on these occasions. He has spent massive amounts of money on this and also purchased number 16. You are never going to be in profit with a Deltic as it cost an awfully amount of dosh to keep them on the mainline or even preserved. To overhaul a powerunit goes into 6 figures and you have two in each loco. On 55002 we are having one set of 18 injectors and fuel pumps serviced for £4000. 5K for a set of batteries and so it goes on. Being 2 strokes you have the added bonus of burning gallons of the stuff at £1.40 a litre.

The group who originally own 16 & 22 went bankrupt with having the locos commercially refurbished including 55002. So it shows that without skilled Deltic engineers including myself with 30 years experience who do this for love rather than money it would be difficult to keep shareholders happy. Not only do we all look after our own groups Deltics but also help each others which its all about - teamwork.;)

Ill being running up 55002 at the NRM over this coming weekend so if theres anyone around York you may want to pop in. Be able to see the loco from the original car park next to the ECML if I take her for a trip up the line.

Cheers
