When, O When, O When, O When?

Both claims are old chestnuts long past their "use by" dates- even Apple acknowledges that Macs DO CRASH. Anti-virus software (and viruses) are available for the Mac OS X (and earlier) platforms.

There were Mac viruses back in 1996, when we were using them on my college newspaper.

The age-old Mac vs. PC war rages on. . . . . and on. . . . and [yawn] on. . . . .

I couldn't agree more. It takes me back to my younger days when we teenagers would argue Ford vs Chevy vs Mopar. Everyone has their personal preference and no one wants to be confused by facts. Going back to something important now.....

Not at all - I just object to the rubbish put out and believed by both "sides" of the so-called "war". Much of this rubbish has now gained the status of "urban legends" - like your statements about Macs not crashing and no Mac viruses.

Hi Everybody.
Hi, I moved from a PC to a Mac over a year ago and I desperately miss driving my Trainz!!!

I see there is a version of TRAINZ for iPad so surely it cant be long before a full-blown Mac version appears? I cant be the only person in the world desperate to drive my trainz on a mac?

Why are the TRAINZ guys dragging their feet on this - I can only play sim city for mac for so long before becoming suicidal

HELP!!!!!

The above was the opening poster's first statement on the thread. what I do not understand is if Trainz was so important to him/her why buy a Mac in the first place.

Was it the fact that he/her did not check that Trainz was available for Mac which would seem to be a big oversight to put it mildly?

Was it the fact that he/she felt that Macs were so much above our poor disheveled PCs that there was no way that they could have lowered themselves to buy something which would actually run the program that was most important to them?

Whatever the answer(s) to the above questions are, this argument has been thrashed out many times on these forums before and the general advice I would give is, if you love Trainz as a hobby do not buy a Mac until a version is available for that machine.

That would seem simple to me
Bill:)

2 ways you can do this natively, firstly, try looking up CrossOver which supposedly supports Mac systems. Secondly, you could go through the complicated proceedure of downloading Wine and installing it: http://wiki.winehq.org/MacOSX/Installing

I worked on a Mac for many years (Senior Graphic Artist) and if it weren't for the games on a PC I would DEFINITELY own a Mac. Easiest computer to use and it has no viruses and DOESN'T CRASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Plus, I'm betting our frame rates would be fantastic!

WRONG! Soo wrong, 2 things to say, Firstly, I've successfully Kernel Panicked a Mac at least 3 times. I am however, unsure and still not sure how.
Secondly, they are prone to viruses as PCs are, however, viruses are much rarer for macs as PCs as most of the world prefers to be gates crashed, possibly due to Gates's aggressive marketing strategies and possible anti-competitive measures.

The problem we have here, is that OSX can only run on Macs, unless you hack it, I know, but we aren't allowed to talk about the program itself, because of the Code of Conduct (item 9) which all of you have said you abide by it. Although, "hacking of software" to my interpretation isn't covered by CoC no.9, but still, I don't want to risk it incase it is.

And also, I am well aware of Apples Darwin project.

I've never used iOS4 so I don't feel inclined or qualified to comment on it.

I have used OSX for some while (and XP and Windows 7) and it certainly is possible to crash and get viruses for any of them. Those who are interested in the open source credentials of Apple may find it worthwhile to look at the webpage
Apple Open Source.

There was a time when
many operating systems drove the IT revolution and Windows and OSX are relative latecomers.

Which is better? Depends on your needs and preference.

just get bootcamp...

Yes, they are working on a Mac version of Trainz. Based on announcements from Auran/NV3, it won't be quite the same as the PC version.
I've been running Trainz on an iMac since August 2009 thru bootcamp with no problems whatsoever. I simply unplugged my external drive from my PC and plugged it into the usb port on the iMac. All my Trainz versions (04,06,09,10) reside on the external drive. I just launch the one I want to run. No big deal at all. :)
I have a low end iMac in-a-box Mac Mini.

Mac vs PC

my 2 cents worth:

As far as the Mac / PC war goes...I must say that I have had no trouble in the 1 1/2 years I've been using the iMac. Whereas the PCs were a constant PITA for one reason or another... some hardware related, some software related.

I understand, OSX is a version/variant/adaptation of Unix which is based around a Kernel. Sort of like a fortress with rings of walls around it for protection. Thus, it is more difficult to breech. Windows, on the other hand, is like an open sore... :o

And you can run TS10 on this setup? Without lag?

To bad Mac's generally use the same exact hardware as the PC counterparts:o
You order a new hard drive from Apple you don't honestly think your getting a special Apple/Mac one are you? HA you are getting stuff from the same companies as PC manufacturers do.
So you have the same chances of hardware failing in a PC as you do a Mac.

It may be "approved" by Apple, but that is about it. HP can approve of Kingston RAM...hardly a "genuine" part.

works fine for me

Works fine for me... mostly depends on the route density, & that's nothing new. I run most all of the built-in stuff and the few routes I have DL'd just fine. I would consider my little iMac a low-end machine, much like a laptop in a box.
Not saying it's perfect, but Trainz was never "perfect" on any of the 4 or 5 pc/video card combos I ran in the past. Like any personal computer, Mac or PC, performance depends on the route/hardware, & settings in Trainz...;)

iMac spec: Processor, 2GHZ intel core 2 duo, 4gb 1067mhz DDR3 RAM, Nvidia 9400m. Trainz resides on a 160GB Segate external drive, 7200 RPM

I've been running 2009 and 2009 on a MacBook Pro 17", 2.16 core duo, 2 GB Ram and x1600. This computer is about 5 years old and it runs 2006 without problems with the sliders maxed, 2009 I have to used windowed mode and sliders at normal, but I get around 30-40 FPS with it.

As far as which is better, that is personal taste. MSTS and Trainz are about the only games I have loaded. My main program is Final Cut Studio. For me a computer is just a tool. I find what I like to do the most outside of train sims, Macs work the best for "ME".

It's not so much Mac won me over but Windows lost me. I know what it takes to maintain a Windows system. I also know I have no desire to spend that time doing it. With so many variations in Windows boxes, along with security issues, I decided enough is enough and switched. I use a computer for my hobbies, not as a hobby in itself. I want to edit video or process pictures, that is what I want to do, not have to fool with the OS just to get to that point.

Aside from my MacBook Pro, I have a PowerMac G5 2.0 dual that has been running non-stop since I bought it new. It doubles as a T.V. with my 30" monitor. I also have an iMac G3 that I bought new in 2001. I use it for all my Blender mistakes and some photo editing. I love the screen on it for color balancing and printing.

Are they "better" than a PC? Not really, parts wise. OS wise, for me yes. I can't complain since every Mac I ever bought is still in use with me and really see no reason to upgrade any of them. Much more than I can say for the several PC's sitting out in my shed. I paid a premium for my G3 10 years ago, along with the others. 10 years is a long time to be actually using it still. A good value in my opinion. Same thing with my 5 year old laptop. Still going strong. I will upgrade all my trash eventually, just see no reason to do it now since most programs I have are optimized for the systems I have.

I'll buy the Mac version of Trainz and try it out. If it runs, great, if not, I'll shelve it and stay with 2006. I won't buy a new computer just to run a game.

Dave.......
