What was the downtime about?

Hi Auran,

I'm always curious when Auran goes down, about why it went down. Today it seemed to down for a few hours up until now, what was going on? It seemed like anything trainz was not functioning in terms of being online.

N3C must be a busy place with millions of Gb of info, and a billion threads, and it must be difficult to maintain. It is a wonder YouTube can cope with thousands of videos being uploaded per hour (there must be a trillion videos).

Every time N3V forum and DLS goes down ... I freak out, cut off from the world (it seems). When it comes back up it really makes me appreciate what N3V does for us ... and it is a comforting relief to regain internet connections.

I previously brought up that there should be (and probably is) a backup failsafe forum(s) and IRC #Trainz Chat, so we can ask each other, what is going on (I just don't know where it is, and how to connect to it.

And I don't want to come across as unappreciative, I really like what Auran does for us.

It would be a good idea to at least put the IRC software on a standalone server. I believe the address is supposed to be irc.auran.com:6667, although I wasn't able to connect even after auran.com went up.

the IRC server was taken down about the time the restructured & got rid of Lance & Alan. Someone N3V staff member told us that it was taken down because they didn't think anyone used it any more. However when they shut it down there were at least a dozen or more people logged into the chat room; go figure.

excluding Zec, probably not. I rarely see staffers even listed in the listing of "who's online". N3V is here for one thing, making money. They'd much rather spend their resources making new things to sell to you then building up the community (although they'll probably never admit it).

That would be rather sad... I would like to see some money put into upgrading their server infrastructure... At least a 15KB/s cap would be appreciated.

Hi All
Thank you for reporting this. The admin has been informed, and he is looking into this.

Servers will be back online as soon as possible.

As a note, there are a large number of threads appear. Generally I will reply to either the largest thread, or the first thread that I see. Otherwise I will end up spending more time replying to threads, than replying to the tickets on the helpdesk...

No, they are now, I'm just wondering why they were offline earlier.

I appreciate the reply, thank you Zec.

yea thats why the site [youtube] suffers with billions of videos and 4x as many ads - its always a buffer fest when im trying to watch some videos.... but thats a different topic.

Thinking about it now though, Youtube does have the power of google behind it, are you sure it's not just your connection?

Wouldn't N3V be setting a world record if it had (doing the math here, I think millions of GB would be about) thousands of petabytes of game content? And the forum stats only show about 80,000 threads :\ TBH, I don't think that alone is enough to justify an uptime of only about 4-5 days.
