What needs to be done?

Morning guys;

I'd like to turn a route that I downloaded into a CNR steam era route, just for personal use. I'm just starting, so far I just cloned the route so I won't mess up the original. DO I HAVE TO CLONE THE SESSIONS OR ANYTHING ELSE, OR IS THIS ALL INCLUDED IN THE ROUTE? I think it will be a lot of work. I'd like to replace locos, vehicles, anything that looks to modern. Sometime to tinker with when I get tired of my own route.

Thanks, cheers........Rick

Go into routes click on session when in route save as the name plus say version 2 save go back to routes and you should see version 2 you can use this for you updates

Thanks Puffer; Just sat in front of the wood stove and had a snack and a think. I will follow your instructions. The snack was good...the thinking not so much!

Cheers.....Rick

You can clone the route without cloning the session(s) and create a whole new session on the cloned route. You can also clone a session from the old route for the new route but you would need to open the cloned session's config file and replace the old route kuid with the new (cloned) route kuid so it would show up as a session associated with the cloned route. I assume you are wanting to change route level assets (scenery, track side objects, grade crossings, ATLS settings, etc.) from modern to steam era as well as make changes to the session level assets (rolling stock, etc.). The only advantage to cloning a session to go with the new route would be if you had used any assets (I-Portals & some protolars type loaders/unloaders, for example) in the old route session that have settings saved within the session then those settings would come with the cloned session but would be lost of you create a new session in your cloned route. Note I'm talking TS2010 here and not TS12, but I assume it works the same way with TS12.

Thanks torino; I was thinking that I should clone the sessions. I'm sure there will be things I have to swap in there. Well, thanks fellas. I've learned a few things about the config file, so I'm not to worried about that. All I have to lose is the time spent on it. I bought trainz thinking I would drive around. I built a route, drove maybe 6 or 7 hours total. Most of that was for testing things out. For some reason I enjoy messing about more than driving!

Cheers....Rick

Tell me if I should NOT be doing this: I have several routes that I have downloaded (Clinch, RBMN, East Kentucky, etc.) and have gone into them and made changes/updates to vehicles, houses, track, etc. and then went to "save as" and altered the name. Then I still have the original and my new one. Is that a SAFE way to do it? I'm not quite sure how to clone a route.

I'm just getting started with it. I finally collected all the stuff for the route I want to clone. Then I just cloned the route like you would do with anything. Then I just went to the user name in the config and stuck "rick" in front of the original name. I was exhausted after that! Hee, hee, not from the cloning, the wife has me doing housework! Thanks to her I have not even had a chance to see if it's on the route list yet! I'll have a look when I get up at about 2AM. That gives me a good 4 hours of trainz time, with nothing but the cats bugging me.

Cheers...Rick

CCOWAN2126:

That works fine. The new route has your kuid ID and not that of the original route creator so it is more or less a clone unless you made changes in the old route before saving it as a new route. In that case the old route is different from the new route so it is not a true clone. Unless you specify differently you will also get a new session. But, as I said in #4 above, the new session will not contain all those "hidden" session level settings that were in the session from the old route. That is where a session clone comes in handy. If I think I may want to clone a session for my new route, I usually would not make any changes on the new route until after I've cloned the session and attached it to the new route. That goes back to the old rule of making route changes in the route layer and session changes in the session layer and things that won't match if you don't.

When writing this, I began to second guess myself. To test I went back and cloned my version of the EVWR Route (a dermmy creation) which has more ATLS triggers than I care to count with session level setting you do not want to loose if you want things like traffic to stop and crossing gates to work. My EVWR also has I-Portals (with session level settings) and other changes related to Protolars loader/unloaders (with session level settings). I then cloned a session from my route to use on the new cloned route. The only change I made to the cloned version of the route was to change the username so I could identify it from the other EVWR routes. For the config file of the cloned session I made three changes. I changed the Username. I changed the Map-Kuid to that of my newly cloned route. Below that is a kuid-table container that looks something like this:

kuid-table
{
0 <kuid:214940:100262>
1 <kuid2:113556:1500031:2>
}

In that container the 0 setting was still showing the map kuid number of my old route. I changed it to the kuid number of my newly cloned route and saved and committed. What happens if you don't change this number? For one thing, your cloned session will still show as a dependent asset of your old route, which it is no longer.

In testing both my old route and session and my cloned route and session were identical to include all session level settings you probably do not want to lose.

Thanks for the input. I am not interested in any sessions related to the routes I have altered. I merely want to update them with newer assets to achieve a certain look and feel to the route. I create my own sessions after that.

Yes, thanks from me too! It should not be hard to get back to this thread. Spent most of the wee hours looking for UP steamers and rolling stock. When that's done I will have to give this info a good read.

Thanks guys, cheers....Rick PS.. I am very interested in keeping the original sessions intact, I just want to replace locos, rolling stock, cars, maybe a few scenery items. I'm hoping to replace the Union Pacific "AI" diesels with steamers and replace the modern rolling stock. I am hoping I will be able to drive CNR locos.

Good day guys: Well so far I think things are going well, although I've done next to nothing. I have cloned the routes and sessions and made the changes. the only other thing I did was change the "era" to 1950s.

there is a misc "Region" file in CM for the route and the 2 sessions have HTMLs. Should I also clone these?

I just started this AM, I've been collecting rolling stock.

Thanks a lot, cheers....Rick
