What makes a train work?

Hello all! First of all merry Christmas, second of all I am creating a train route and was considering putting a locomotive on display but i don't know how to make it not operable. Just a static display. Can you help me out?

I think you have to clone the loco to your own UserID and then change the "train" or "traincar" type to something like "Building" or Scenery". There may be more to it than that, like removing smoke effects or something, but that would be a start.

About a decade ago John Whelan and Bob Sanders uploaded a set of wagons that had been turned into scenic track objects (ie. snap to track like signals, buffer stops etc.) I cloned and uploaded some reskins of my own of some of these wagons. Check out the most recent revised versions of these uploaded by John:
<kuid2:86627:100478:1> LMS 10 ton van scenery
<kuid2:86627:100294:3> GWR 4 plank fast fish wagon w tarp scenery
<kuid2:86627:100420:1> GWR TEVAN van 19033 scenery
<kuid2:86627:100500:2> PO Vauxhall 5 plank V2 open door wagon scenery
<kuid2:86627:200477:1> Dance hall brake van scenery
<kuid2:86627:100080:1> LMS van vented scenery
<kuid2:86627:100320:1> GWR MINK V22 30 foot van scenery
<kuid2:86627:200463:1> SR 5 Plank wagon w normal mapping scenery

Don't know if the same principles could be applied to a loco as well as a wagon, but worth checking out the configs to see how it was done?

From memory basically I merged the bogey and the top into a single mesh then treated it as scenery asset with a trackside tag. If you don't have the blender sources you can't do it that way. These scenery trackside objects take the same texture file as many of my wagons, well you need to cut and paste the wagon texture file on to the scenery texture file but it's fairly simple to do. If you're filling a siding they make a positive performance impact compared to moveable wagons.

What you can do though is build a config.txt file with the engine mesh then have a submesh of the bogey. You need to play around with the config.txt file a little bit but it can be done.

Depending on the licensing of the original or the ability to get permission I might take a look.

Cheerio John
