I love them all mostly Steam but i do use Diesel a lot and sometimes Electric.

Germany did have an engine like that, the V 3201, it was a ugly box with a diesel engine driving an air compressor, the air going to the drive wheels which were set up like a steam engine. It was a complete failure and was soon thereafter scrapped, but we also use fireless steam engines at nuclear plants.
