What Is The Best Video Card For Trainz

Is it Nvidia gtx580 or is it Ati 6970 ,then what about SLI or Crossfire,
what do you think
steve

It's what works the best with your pc specs and meets your personal requirements. I am running GeForce GTS250 on 32 bit Windows 7 and am very happy with it. I can guarantee that many others use different cards and are also very happy.

How can you tell a good wine? Ignore the label and ignore the wine experts, but just taste it. If you like the taste ...... it's a good wine! If you don't like the wine, then it's not a good wine .......... regardless of the ancient label and the high price tag!

Probably not a good analogy......... but there are similarities between choosing a good wine and choosing a good video card!

SLI or Crossfire will give you very little speed increase for a lot of money, just not worth it for what you get if you are only running Trainz, only good for "gamers" with monitors over 24".

I doubt you will see much if any performance gain with that 580 either. Trainz primarily uses the CPU to do most of the work anyway.

If that is the case then why is it that i can put 2 Nvidia gtx 9800 cards in my computer and it will not run the route to a great extent ,if its only using the cpu it shouldn't make any difference ,then i put 2 ati 5970 in the computer and it runs far better near flawless ,so it does use the GPU'S on the video cards as well.
however for some reason [ driver related i believe ] nvidia seems to run Trainz better for me , and in SLI also ,people may believe that sli or crossfire make no difference, turn one of the cards off on a big route and you will soon turn it back on
with crossfire it only helps slightly with the right drivers.

if this is true that Trainz only basicly uses the CPU to run the game then there is something that Auran should be looking at and fix it fast
just my opinion

are all sim games run by CPU like trainz

Re Trainz primarily using the CPU.
Not strictly totally true now as the Speed Tree renderer uses the GPU, not the processor and I believe some other elements of the graphics are now handled by the GPU as well, upgrading my graphics from a GTX240 to a GTS 450 resulted in a doubling of FPS and no stutter, have to add though that on subsequently upgrading the CPU it doubled again. Take your pick I guess?

The most noticeable improvement on upgrading graphics besides the frame rate increasing was the disappearance of speed trees when placing them seems to have stopped, or maybe the number you can place has gone up considerably.

Actually there has been much discussion on this forum of a need to update Trainz' engine because it is so dated, and I think at least part of that is due to the fact that GPUs have become so good at becoming workhorses themselves.

I think it will happen eventually, but whether or not it will be fully compatible with existing content remains to be seen.

But it would be nice, if the "required specs" of your machine actually matched what we are told we need to have to run the bloody game.

What we need to run the game and what we have as computers are two different things ,game specs are at the least needed to run the game at not such a high detailed and complexity ,they are just basic
my computer is home built by me

Gigabyte mobo GA-X58A-UD7
CPU I7 930 not the biggest CPU
12 GIG DDR3 CORSIAR RAM 1333 not the biggest ram
2 X ATI 5970 VIDEO CARDS
POWER SUPPLY 1000 WATTS
MONITER VK246H HDMI
COOLMASTER FULL TOWER CASE HAF
Yes this is a little overkill for trainz but i also run other games as well
like most people do

regards steve

I am getting 2 new nvidia gtx 580 cards after Christmas so i will let you know how Trainz runs with them ,i will put the ATI 5970 'S into another computer im building using a XFX X58 MOBO as a downloading computer.
