What does this say?

LMAO, Justin to the rescue!!! (He's probably got the super secret squirrel software from Minority Report that can take a 20x20 gif, enlarge and enhance it to see that it has the full text of War & Peace in it) :hehe:

I can say with confidence that this is actually the paint information. it says something like

PNTD - 372 10-11
CARBOLINE 875-HS-2758

this gives (in order) the number, date painted, paint type used. in the case i listed it is Carboguard paint. the car you pictured probably has a Williams Hayward coating. you could probably safely make up something there.

Well phooey. I got tired and just put what John said. Oh well.... Like my sig says.

Thanks anyhow Justin.

Cheers,

Dave

Don't laugh. Seriously I worked for a company that made a digital proofing printer that could print text down to 1/2 point. That's 144th of an inch. The text was so small you needed a microscope to read it.

When railroad dispatchers lose track of trains and railcars, and need to know where they are ... they call norfolksouthern37 at his home phone ! :hehe:

Norfolksouthern37 has Google Earth Live, where he can view live, real time satellite feed, and Google calls him up to assist them .

Well, here's what I decided to use. Hope it's "good enuf" for the purists out there:

Look for my new 2-Bay Cylindrical Covered Hopper on the DLS soon:

Well done Dave, if the words were of common usage, I'm sure someone would have deciphered them sooner. I was leaning in the direction you were, and having Justin affirm it puts it over the top.

Dave, Norfolksouthern37 is correct although I cannot say that is the exact lettering. I saw a TILX 2 bay today NB through Little Rock and the first line read PNTD 422 12-05. The second line contained a word followed by numbers & letters but I could not make out exactly what the 2d line said. I assume this relates to the interior lining. Also, #3342 Has two lines of text on the 9th welded panel (from left to right) in the upper right of the car that reads (line1) OWNERSHIP SUBJECT TO A SECURITY AGREEMENT (line 2) FILED WITH THE SURFACE TRANSPORTATION BOARD. The stencil just above that on the roof is upside down when viewed from the ground and reads (line 1) CAUTION (line 2) NO SIDE LADDER and is applied also on the opposite side rear as well as (rightside up) between the first and second end ladder steps on both ends.

That said, this is still a fine looking car.

Oh, Lord! "Also, #3342 Has two lines of text on the 9th welded panel (from left to right) in the upper right of the car that reads (line1) OWNERSHIP SUBJECT TO A SECURITY AGREEMENT (line 2) FILED WITH THE SURFACE TRANSPORTATION BOARD." We've got lawyers putting legal mumbo-jumbo on freight cars now?

Be sure you get permission from whomever "composed" that prose before you republish it on a model. You might get sued for copyright infringement. On the other hand, it is satisfying to know that if I ever decide to buy a 2 bay hopper car it will have notice stenciled on the side that someone else may have a lien on it. Was there one cautioning us not to eat the contents of the car?

Bernie

I've seen plenty of it on railcars in the 70's as well..... usually, it is quite bit longer, telling what the actual bank that "owns" the car is and where they are. I've not seen detailed enough photos to be able to add it to many cars (hence the "lorem ipsum" reference:hehe:). I consider myself lucky enough to find enough to add the basic stencils ("2IN HF COMP SHOES" or "\|/ Air tank drain" or whatever) to flesh out details on a car.

Hi,

Even if you make the inscription a separate texture file, how close do you have to go in trainz to be able to read it? I am sure, that you might be able to manoevre the free floating camera close enough. But can you still read it in the external camera mode? How close do you have to post a tracking camera to a track to be able to read it?

I can easily understand the satisfaction it gives a content creator of having created a perfectly detailled model, but what about penalties in terms of performance? Are you using lod to offset some of them? And again my question at what situation while playing trainz is such a detail noticable?

Cheers,

Konni

Can't see how this would affect performance..... It is simply a 2D texture map. Not like it is a complex mesh with 50K+ polys or anything.

. . .having created a perfectly detailled model. . .

LOL! My stuff is far from perfect!! I just rather have the writing on the side of locos and railcars at least readable.

Which would you prefer?

(my apologies to whoever created the car on the left.)

I am with you Dave, when creating whatever, I put as much effort into my creations as I possibly can and that also includes small text (where possible) on my locomotives. As Konni above says, it is the satisfaction of first to create something what and how I, as a content creator, like to create and secondly, because I can. And that is good enough for me :p.

I also use 4 aggressive LODs on my locomotive models.

Cheers

I prefer the one on the left, since I made it! That's it, you're dead to me now!

Okay, I'm just joking. I cranked out a load of hoppers and boxcars based on the old Paintshed skins when 2010 came out because people were complaining about having to fix older items. I just made a bunch of each so new users could have some variety on their routes without having to fix anything. I did them hastily and paid little attention to the results. Paintshed skins are usually a little blurry anyway. Thanks for making an example out it though, wait till you see what I do with yours!

By the way, I did have a little trouble with the ribs on your hopper, a couple of the SOO ones are not lined up exactly right, but as I got to the last one, I figured out what to do. Make sure to post a picture of any mistakes you find in my work.:o

Hi Scott,

Each additional texture file means another file to be loaded. Depending upon the number of times you are using an additional texture file it means at least one more material needing processing by the computer. The penalties in terms of performance may not amount to much and may not be noticable on a test map. If you a placing such assets on a map showing e.g. a large shunting yard with dozens of traincars, the accumulated penalties may have noticable effects on performance.

Lod-regimes can take away some of these problems, but require additional efforts to implement.

Keeping that in mind requires some additional altrusism on the part of the content creator. On the other hand, many complaints about performance of trainz can be ultimately traced to poorly built content.

Cheers,

Konni
