What does this error mean?

Building in the mountains
When using TANE and trying to place the TUME-23136-signal on a single track I get this error message:

"Error: Cannot add object as the selected layer is above that of the target track. Trackside objects cannot be placed in a layer above the track they are being attached to."

The error shows only on some tracks and not on others in the route.

This baffles me. Maybe one of you have come across this before?

Any suggestions welcome.

My guess is you have "layer A" selected and are trying to put a track side object to a track that is in "layer B".
If I am correct, the solution is to figure out what layer the track is in, select that layer and try again.

Not behind my gaming PC so I can't double check for you if I am right.

A common one with me, it seems some of the track is on the session layer instead of route, this can be corrected by selecting with the query tab '?' and changing the layer to the one required.
In my case I am usually working with session layer selected and should be using the route layer when working with track. Age related problem here :)

Just to clarify this error message, consider the image below ...

https://postimage.org/

The top four layers are route layers and I always place all track, signals, switches, bridges, tunnels, and active industry track in the "route-layer" at the very top of the list, that way all other layers that could contain track objects, e.g. the "invisible signals" layer, are below.

The bottom four layers are session layers and contain assets that can vary from one session to another. Trackmarks and triggers I place in a session layer "TMs and trigger" because these can vary between sessions - not all sessions will need the same triggers and trackmarks.

If, for example, I had accidentally placed a section of track in the "TMs and trigger" session layer and then later returned to the "route-layer" to add a signal or a switch then I would get the error message "Cannot add object as the selected layer is above that of the target track. Trackside objects cannot be placed in a layer above the track they are being attached to.".

This problem is not helped by the fact that Surveyor does not tell you which layer you are currently working in, for example by placing its name in the top menu bar. It helps if you lock layers that you are not currently working in.

Many thanks all. It also helped to merge session and other layers into the route layer. I had forgotten that extra layers are created by TransDem.
