What computer specs...

I really don't think Trainz is a program that you can just throw money at and fix.

True, but I'm overdue for a new system, as this one is over 6 years old, and the harddrive is even older, and has taken quite a beating. Plus, this system has survived a yellow jacket swarm (quite a story behind that!). So, its about time for me to get a new one. Thanks for all your input guys, I appreciate it. This will make deciding on a new one a lot easier.

That's my Vista computer, and this is my XP computer:

Dell Dimension C521 - $1538 after upgrades

2 GB DDR2
1 TB Hard drive
256 MB ATI Radeon X1650 Pro

Trainz Classics is on my new one, and it is the best
TRZ2006 is on my Dell, and there isn't much performance loss than my new one

New Computer

Well, I got my new computer yesterday, and so far I love it!! I ended up getting a Dell Inspiron 530. Here's the specs:

Intel Duo Core 6550, 2.33 GHZ, 4mb Cache, 1333 FSB
2 GB RAM 667 mhz
320 GB HD
256MB Radeon 2600xt
20" Flat Panel Widescreen Monitor

I've run some high detailed trains, with all the sliders to the right, and its been smooth as silk so far. Anyways, thanks to all who responded to my post :D

Could you be very nice and run either the TRS2006 or the TC benchmark please.

It might help others.

Thanks John

I would be glad to do that, however, I don't have either TRS06 or TC. Otherwise, it wouldn't be a problem. Sorry :o

Hi, Chaps -

This is interesting information. I've always thought that I have a pretty powerful system - especially where TRS is concerned. However, I also believe my TRS experience is far from perfect. Perhaps I'm just expecting too much?

Here are my specs...
  • Windows Vista 32-bit
  • Intel Core Duo 6600 @ 2.40GHz
  • HD: 400 GB
  • Memory: 4 GB
  • Readyboost: 4 GB
  • nVidia GeForce 8800 GTX (768 MB)
The graphics card alone should make TRS fly but I still experience frequent stutters and jerkiness. Perhaps we need to re-visit the trainzoptions.txt file again.

4 gig Readyboost???? lol why???? Do thay actually work???? How much fps dose it give PP?

H, Overmars -

Yes, the Readyboost ram certainly does make a difference (on a Vista PC). The computer can take a while to start - at least 5 mins - as it re-writes the cache, but the delay is worth it.

I can't honestly say that it makes a difference to TRS - but I assume there must be some benefit.

Had to go with XP, since all the negative feedback I kept hearing about Vista. I figured, why change what works well? :D

"Good Thinking"

No, not really! TRS (and almost everything else) works perfectly on Vista. There have been some teething problems with the OS - but that's to be expected. It does many things far better than XP and once everything falls into place the benefits will far outweigh any legacy issues.

I'll stick with XP if only for the frame rate.
Interesting that Dell has gone back to offering XP.

Who can blame them. Anything for a quiet life! Unfortunately, the anecdotal evidence suggests that it is the users, not the OS, that's often at fault!

:hehe:

Hello Marvin, finally found this post again.
This is exactly the PC I'm looking to buy for TRS 2006.
Are you still happy with it???????
Any thoughts on running TRS on a widescreen??

Jytte, sorry I took so long, I didn't notice anyone had posted again. Yes, I'm still very happy with this system, although, I haven't tried out some of the larger layouts yet (DLS problems again). Everything else has given me little or no problems whatsoever. Oh, and I only have TRS 2004. Eventually I'll look into getting '06, and then probably run them both on this system (have plenty of HD space). But for now, '04 is working just fine. As for the widescreen, I love it, and at first I thought it was overkill a bit to get the 20". But, I got too good a deal on this system to pass it up! :D Hope that helps.
