Actually I believe XP will use 3.5 gigs of memory even though it does accept 4. If the motherboard will take it, I would put in 4. If I remember correctly a 64 bit system will handle a lot more.

At the moment I have 4 ram slots each one taking up 512MB chip banks. This was the highest available bank when I last upgraded. I haven't checked if a larger bank is now available, if not, I've run out of physical room. With the price of computers these days I may as well get a new one (and downgrade to XP) rather than change the motherboard.
My comp; handles 2004/2006 with no problem, I'm thinking ahead to 2009.
