What brought you into Trainz?

What made you get into Trainz? Ads, siblings, etc. As for me, the second disk on my MSTS install was scratched beyond repair so I couldn't play with it anymore. So, upon search of a temporary train sim, I came across demos of Trainz, and I started to gain intrest. I decided to get TRS2006, after that, on December 12th, 2006, I joined you guys. That was when I still had the TRS2004 demo. So, a few days after the 12th, I got TRS2006. And I got it too as a Christmas present from my dad.

A long time ago in a country far far away,

Auran promised great things ....

now things are in kaos ...

This was before I had my computer, I was riding Amtraks Three Rivers over Horshoe Curve, and I saw an ad for Trainz and how you can Build Routes in TRAINS MAG. I knew at that moment it was for me and I putchased it that summer with my computer.

I am an old msts person, but msts has quite a few problems like it dosn't always start... etc. So I ran into Ricky and Steve's website the Narrow-gauge Railways of Ireland for trainz and instantly fell in love with the little narrow gauge engines there, particularly the The Londonderry & Lough Swilly Railway 4-8-0s. Shortly after I bought trainz 2006, after failing to find a copy of 04 at any store in the area.

What brought me into Trainz? A few things.

I was with my mom in Costco one afternoon, browsing the game section. I was probably only 8 or 9, maybe 10 at the time. I was interested in trains ever since I the time I could talk, and I also loved computers. I was into simulations at that age, (still am) such as flight simulators. I was never one for those stereotypical FPS games where all you do is mow down aliens. The only combat games I enjoyed was realistic military games and combat flight sims. I thought, "Why don't they make a train game?"

Well, my mom noticed it first, and tried to hide it so she could surprise me with it. I noticed under her arm something what appeared to be a loco on a game box. I reached for it. I grabbed the box and couldn't believe my eyes. Right there was a BNSF C44 blasting down the tracks on the cover. I asked my mom to buy it, and she did. I was hooked on MSTS ever since. After about 3-5 years of casually playing with the default items, I discovered the community. I signed up for many forums and had a blast, talking with other people, and trying custom content. Around that time, I was frustrated, since MSTS was NOT designed to be altered and added onto, in my opinion. Problems arose; not unusual I was told. Anyways, I kept going, loving it and hating it at the same time. I know my way around a computer VERY well, but I was new to the workings of MSTS's coding.

I couldn't put up with it anymore. I decided to try out TRS 06'. It was much easier to use, and I enjoyed it. I still like both, for different reasons. I wouldn't give up either. I'm still not satisfied completley with TRS, but it does the job.

christmas shopping with my resident dead head (son) for some games. spotted trs 2004 and thought I'll have that. hours of pleasure and frustration. UTC came next (probably because it was cheap) as a present the following year. never really got into that. 2006 came about because disc 1 on 2004 cracked, since then I'm on every evening. i have upgraded twice since then, lacking hard drive space for one and especially graphics. its frightening to think how much has been spent just for this. bet I'm not on my own it that respect.
looking to upgrade again. must be mad. Its only a game or is it an addiction??

A bargan game table at a computer fair back in Feb 2002. Picked up Trainz 1.1. Uninstalled it because it had no steam locos. Luckily I checked back and found Prowler's K27 and joined the forum in June. Been here since then.

I first heard about it at a Model Railroad convention, back when it was still in production. Back then MSTS was the only train simulator I had heard of so this was interesting for me. My dad preordered it and from that point on I have been buying Trainz games ever since.

After I bought MSTS I found TRS2004 in PC world, tried it out and within a year bought UTC and TRS2006.

Same here really (except the UTC bit), but I still occasionally uses MSTS. I'd actually known about TRS for some time, but at £30 I didn't want to spend the cash. Then my interest in MSTS dwindled as I got impatient with the instability, so decided to buy it. After using it for a couple of months, I thought itwas an absolute bargain, and after getting 06 at Christmas I think the money Auran has gained from me was justified. I use the JT versions, and I don't see the problem others have with putting the disc in (nor has my DVD drive eaten it).

If TC continues to be developed I'll buy that too, but as it is there is little benefit for me in upgrading at the moment. Who knows what MSTS2 will bring, or whether it will reach the end of the development cycle this time.

War Games

I used to play war games and nearly always lost. I found Trainz did'nt bruise my ego too much.

Blue:p :p :p

Well, here I am reading all your reply's and TooT TooT.
I was/am still facinated with real model trains. I grew up wanting to be a Train Driver. My first HO scale model around 10 Years old bought by my grandparents in Germany, yep you guessed it Marklin - The best! (no I am not biased - :p ).
After 5 more trips to Germany and more and more trains I loved it. The only real issue was space - You got it, I could setup the layout on a board on the dining room table and then it had to be put back in its box afterwoods - Sigh - :( ! And then computers and TRAINZ. taadaa (fanfare sound)

I cannot remember the year that I heard of Trainz (I am sure they do :D ). What I mean to say is that I loved it! not only could I see that it was way way better than any other thing on the market BUT also even way more useable. The future looked great, with great people and the community around look at all the amazing stuff to happen with Trains.
I even remember getting to sign up and go and meet the people at Auran in BrisVegas (yeah your right Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, down under far far away from the rest of the world - teehee - well back then it was!)
Wow what a train ride the last years have provided. Amazing.
Yes I used to read all the forum news and gossip and not say much in reply but I have seen alot of you guys go and offshoot development and new creations to be run in trainz. And the details that you all were very proud of - of cause why not, it is bloody-well brilliant!
Trainz, UTC, 04, 06, TC I see is done and dusted and (maybe) more to come (If the numbers are there :o ) - Who Knows!!!! the Customers!!!

Auran - You did us a favour. (Thankyou) In your boardroom discussions I am sure it was a complete argument at all times as to the continuation of Trainz.
And thankyou to all of the supporters out there to support Auran ! (clap clap clap).

-- The future will show us that the current decisions are correct --

I always liked trains! As a young boy, I went to the station, and watch trains. Now, my hobby is my work. I'm working for the Dutch Railways.
How I got into Trainz? I worked at the library, and I found the game at my work. So: I borrowd it, and I played it.... and I was in love. haha.
