What am I doing wrong?

When in "Free Roam" mode, you get to select your consist and place it on the tracks; however, there doesn't seem to be a way of placing a locomotive. What am I doing wrong?

Also, in line with the above, what is the purpose of the Rail Yard and how (if you can) do you use those engines?

Welcome to Trainz!

In most cases, you should place your trains using a Session created in Surveyor. The consists that you see in free-roam are all currently installed consists which include built-in and user-created. To add trains to your free roam on the fly you will need to have first created these consists (with locomotives) in Surveyor.

Rail yard is a pretty much useless mode only useful for looking at your trains one by one.
