West Somerset Railway

A further thought - the tafweb tutorial (and many others) were written for TRS2004 and current versions of Trainz need detail differences in the config file. So it may be that simply copying the tafweb config (although correct at the time) may throw up problems - especially in the region and era categories which are now writtten differently.

Hello jmarbury, you indicate that the just trains train driver ( WSR ) can be copied over to TS12,... does this mean the copying of the .ja files of WSR into the builtin folder in TS12 or are there other requirements to be implemented , thank you for any help available,..regards

Hi oldie, there is a snag, Traindriver won't let you down load the files from there, but if you have TRS2006 like you do, you can get round it, by loading a fresh copy of TRS2006, then load Traindriver in to that, now export all the files in the local folder across into your TS12 copy, I don't think there are any .ja files to copy across, but it was so long ago I can't remember, (old age isn't all it's cracked up to be).:confused:

If you have any trouble let me know.
To show you that it can be done heres a pic.

Hi Privite,

I hope you don't mind me making a comment about the trees you have started to use. You are using the old type billboard trees which to see at their best need compatability mode to be on. I personally prefer to run in native mode and if you intend that your map can be used to its best advantage in 2010 and 2012 (which does not have a compatability mode) it might be worthwhile you considering Pofig's speedtrees or the 2009 native mode series of trees by JVC (Jankvis) (eg. those with ~ in the title).

Because I run in native, I personally have been changing all my favourite layouts to Pofig trees which I think are the best trees ever made for Trainz. If you intend that compatability mode is used, I recommend you look at Trunda trees.

I know my remarks are likely to cause some converse opinion from some people, but we all have our own preferences.

Please take my comments as constructive, not criticism, but I think the right trees can make or break the appearance of a layout.

I look forward to seeing your layout developing since I have a keen interest in WSR.

I have to agree with Scottish, JVC and Trunda trees are far better than the lollipop type we had before they came out. Do have a look at them and decide for yourself.
My only other comment on the limited amount of screenshots displayed here which may not be re[resentative of your route, is that I thought Somerset to be a lot more hilly.... have you condidered using a DEM?

Angela

Thanks for both of your replies

I am using JVC trees on my route, as i to think they are the best type, but i will look at spread trees as Scottish is right, i just cant see any i like.

Also i will put hills in there, but i tend to leave things like that to a day where i feel like building hills:hehe:

thanks

@privite

I do not suggest using the built-in speedtrees, I mean specifically the ones created by Pofig which are not on the DLS. They can be downloaded using the links to external sites on posts by Pofig on the forum.
Also I mean the JVC trees specifically created by him for TS2009 native mode. He has created many great trees over the years but his earlier ones were before native mode appeared and are billboard type which need compatability mode. If you search the DLS black pages with only 2009 ticked and the others unticked, this will filter out the earlier ones.

That explanes it then, i've been on DLS but couldn't find anything of his. i will be sure to go on his site

Thanks

Edit: I dont get it, does DEM data cost money, only i've had a look at it and it looked like it cost something, but im not sure

The DEM data can be obtained free from suitable sets of data available from UK Ordnance Survey and NASA sites however you need additional software to use this data and convert it into the format used by Trainz to create the 'to scale' elevations on the baseboards of your layout. One piece of software is called Transdem which has to be purchased from Geophil. The other method is to use two programs, one called Microdem the other called Hog, which are both free downloads.

I personally only use DEM occasionally and therefore I do not have Transdem, but many forum members who have it speak highly of it. I have used Microdem with Hog to successfully create the initial baseboards and once you get your head round the terminology used, it is straightforward.

Since you are creating maps 'to scale' they can be quite large.

Thanks for that. for now i will stick with normal trainz, and see how it turns out, but it something to think about. also do you know any other speedtrees which are for download, cant find much on pofig's website. cheers

@privite

Pofig uses a few file hosting sites and I think at the moment he is in the process of changing sites. He has 400 to 500 beautiful speedtrees available, enough to cover most requirements. Although they are speedtrees I have found that they have low impact on system resources, much lower than the built-in ones.

Try here, all the 10 files listed on this page are tree libraries, each containing multiple trees;

I've had a quick look round the website but i will have a good look through ALL the content tomorrow, looks like good stuff.

Got 2nd building complete, looks great but i think it needs retexturing and resizing, way to big!!
