I still haven't fully understood why Sniper's done that, but somewhere on the forum is a 'fix the forum' thread that mentions it (probably in Trainz Community)

He could well be. Apparently, it was something to do with being logged out whilst typing a forum post.

That would be me. I'm used to forums that have a set time limit for "inactivity" and automatically log out members who haven't changed pages for a while, but usually it's 20-30 minutes. What I'm getting from this forum is typing a message for less than five minutes, then hit the Post Quick Reply button, then getting the message that I'm not logged in. Don't remember offhand when it started, but I did send in a report using the http://forums.auran.com/trainz/sendmessage.php link a while back, also mentioning the forum search unfunctional function. I visit several other websites that use Vbulletin software and don't have this problem anyplace but here.

Have you contacted Helpdesk about your forum logout/search issues, as the link you posted no longer works properly either?

I just now clicked on it, got the email box with the message window;

Obviously I checked the Site Feedback button for that, never got an email response. Obviously the search function they wouldn't respond to since they already said they're working on it and don't know how long it will take to fix it, but the automatic logout started long after the software update that broke the search function. Main problem appears to be (1) the short time limit, and (2) typing in a message window being detected as idle time. Understandable that forums do that to save bandwidth for the people who log in, look at the main forum listings, then go to work leaving the computer idle for 8 hours, but the message window shouldn't be set up so that opening the window detects it as no user input for X number of minutes. Nobody else is getting this? Crud, gotta open the main forum page in another tab and log back in again.

I can tell you why that is. The email address that supposedly goes to has been dead for a few years now.
Just a thought - have you tried leaving a Who's Online window open whilst creating a post?

You are certainly not alone in this problem. I have noticed it since the change to the current forum. A real PIA. Many of us take the time to think out and check our posts for grammar and spelling, and then find we have been timed out. Definitely something that needs to be looked at.
BTW, I use Opera 12 as my browser - not sure if that contributes to the problem. What do you use?

Firefox, google chrome, internet exploder, all three have the same problem. And yes Shane, I have tried having the main forum page open in another tab, switch to that and hit the reload button to make sure I'm still logged in, and logging in again if I'm not. That does work, I haven't actually timed to see how long it takes to log me out if I don't switch back to the main forum page and reload it occasionally, but it will log me out if I don't.

Now he tells me, so for any forum bug we're supposed to submit a helpdesk ticket? Thought that was supposed to be reserved for problems with the actual game, but I'll try that.

Well the end result is that it has to make the ugliest signature I have ever seen in any forum , bar none.

I'm not sure why the forum is logging you out after only 5 minutes of inactivity, as it still appears to be normally 15 minutes to my knowledge, but have you tried checking the "remember me" box when you log in? The forum will still log you out after 15 minutes (again, normally) of inactivity, but it will automatically log you back in when you perform an action again, such as returning to the forums after going offline for a while. This, of course, should only be done on a personal computer and not a public or shared one where you don't want anyone else to be able to just go to the forums and be logged in as you.

I actually stated the 'Who's Online' page, not the main forum page, as the Who's Online page refreshes every 2 minutes.
