Weather?

Is there a way to change the weather from always being sunny to something else? I'm wondering, to make it more realistic, for the Beloreck - South Ural Mountains route if there is a way to make it snow (as in it is actually actively snowing, not just snow on the ground with sun).

Search the DLS for rules and driver commands with the word "weather". Also check the Regional Weather Rule by Pitkin and G.M.

Create a new session.
Go to the Edit Menu and choose Edit Environment.
On the left side of the dialogue box click on the tab with the image of the sun and cloud.
Pick a sky with lots of clouds.
Move the Weather slider to Snow.

Now this part is a bit trickier.
Go to the tab with the clock.
This is where you adjust the color of the lighting.
The clock dial is a 24 hour clock.
The green dots represent the light settings at that time of day.
For this discussion just click the + button and add a green dot at the tip of the clock's hand. This means you are adjusting the lighting right now when you start the session.
Ok, now the artistic bit.
Below you see a number of boxes and dials. If you move the cursor over them the tool tip shows the name.
Click on the ambient color preview and the dials light up.
You adjust these dials to adjust the ambient lighting. Now hold down the Shift key and use the cursor to move the dials together. Set the lighting to a light grey.
Now, to get rid of the shadows, make the Sun color preview black or very nearly black.
The scene will be pretty dark so use the vertical slider labeled Light Brightness to increase the brightness.
Now adjust the Fog Density to add that snowy look to the scene.
Close the Edit Environment dialogue.
Save the session and go to driver. When you release pause then it will start to snow.

That is awesome!

Two questions... how do I make the ground snow covered?

When I start the session, it says no train selected. What did I do wrong?

No train selected... Make sure you have selected a train unless you have created an empty session then you'll need to place a train consist first.

For snow covered ground, you need two things.

1) You need to edit the environment settings in the session and change the calendar to a winter month. If that doesn't work, lower the snow line to zero. (0)

2) Textures used on the route have to be seasonal. If the route you are driving uses seasonal textures, then the ground will turn white, but not always. There could be some dead brown textures for grass and plants as well, so your ground will end up with snow and patches of dead grass. This is the same for other assets including track, buildings, trees, etc. Some trees will lose their leaves instead of collecting snow on the branches.

Okay thank you. Is there a way to just copy an existing session (train consist and all) and then just modify that? I think before I just did Edit route and saved it and maybe that is why I don't have a train or anything in mine. I'm still quite new in this, so I have not done much but use the existing sessions.

Yes, you can clone a session and a route together. Open the session you want and choose Save as.

What this will do is give you your own route and session to play around with as you wish. When you do that, put in a name that you want other than the original name and the session will have Default in the name. This route and session will be setup with everything in place and ready to go.

If you open that session and choose Save as again, you can create sessions only which you can name however you want and will have everything in place.

---

There's a more complex way of keeping the session only but I'll let you do it this way for now until you get used to everything.
