WC Ride Along Story

Let me tell y'all a Wisconsin Central ride along story.

It was a cool July morning at Fond Du Lac, I headed over to the Wisconsin Central's facilities at Fond Du Lac and went into the area. After an hour of talking to a WC official, I managed to secure a free ride on the WC. We had a freight train idling in the yard, due out at 7:21 a.m. We had two SD45 type diesels and a SOO Line SD40-2 type diesel. We had sixty five freight cars in tow behind our power. It was only 6:15 a.m., so I went to the diner and met the crew of the train at a diner. We began to chat and I informed them I had permission to ride a WC train, they said, they were taking the 7:21 train to Green Bay and they said, I could tag along. After a long breakfast we headed over to the SD45 and started our journey to Green Bay from Fond Du Lac and in no time at all, we were on our way. We had clear signals along the entire trip. As we raced along we passed some beautiful scenery along the tracks and we even passed a local freight hauled by GP38s on a siding waiting for us to pass. We had tank cars, hoppers, covered hoppers, coil cars, a couple of autoracks and a string of boxcars. Upon departure of Fond Du Lac, the sun was shining and we made excellent time and we got to Green Bay by early afternoon. We kept bouncing from 55 miles an hour to 40 miles an hour, but all and all it was a fun ride.

Well...that's the story. Rate and comment.

Way cool. I've never had a chance to do something like that. I know someone that worked for the WC way back when they first started out. When they were taken over by the CN, he went on to work in logistics for some other non-rail industry.

The Ponies are in the stable getting a drink of water before being wye'd and shipped back to the Powder River Basin for another load of black diamonds.

Took a spin up to the Wausau Paper Mill up in Brokaw and caught the switcher switching out the mill

The Real deal

PS...I know there not the same model, but it serves its purpose and does the job :)

Today was working around the Rothschild Paper Mill with one of the rare switchers that they use

Pulling empties to take to the small yard located here at the mill

Train LO12, the daily Wausau to Prentice train, is seen here at Bradley, getting ready to take the Valley Sub, south to Wausau

With a fresh crew on board, WC F45 6655 stands tall and ready to depart Hawk Jct for Steelton Yard

It was a VMD WC F45...Funny thing is...The REAL 6655 was a WC SD45 at one point in time and was the only WC unit back in the day that got scrapped.....:'(
