Wanted: used copy of Trainz 04

I know I'm going to start a riot here, but here goes. Please, do not slam me or this thread.

I'm looking for a LEGITIMATE copy of Trainz 04 to be used for testing purposes ONLY! I already own 06, and 09 and need 04 just for testing my engines.

I am NOT willing to pay full price for 04 because it is an older copy, and my intent is for testing the integrity of my creations for 04 compatablity.

In order to create better and more compatable engines, 04 is quickly becoming a necessity for me. Otherwise I cannot claim that my engines will work in 04.

Relying on others that have 04 to be my test subjects is not efficient nor is it fair to those who expect a working product.

Tall request I know, but it would be no different than if I went to a garage sale or Ebay and picked up a used copy.

Since there are still quite a few 04 Trainz'ers out there I want to enable them to enjoy my engines also.

$15 new from Auran.

Trainz (TRS2004) USD $14.95The most complete railroad experience ever created.
Plus postage at least you know its genuine.

Reality find a beta tester with TRS2004 much easier.

Also TRS2004 is difficult to test with especially if your content uses scripts as the script handling wasn't very robust. Translation two items will run fine on TRS2004 if they are the only thing installed. Install them both and place them on a layout and TRS2004 crashes.

The correct syntax for config.txt file differs between TRS2004 and other versions. Unless you intend creating different versions with different syntaxes it is highly likely that one version of Trainz will flag an error unless your locos are very simple indeed.

TRS2004 isn't as robust as later versions and appears to be more sensitive to the hardware.

I work with a group of people many of whom prefer TRS2004. I can create content in version 2.4 which will run perfectly on three out of four machines and its not always the same machine that has problems. Some times if I clone the item again without making any changes it will suddenly work on all four machines.

These days if I put a version number of 2.4 on an item it means it may work in TRS2004 but if you have problems I recommend you move to TC3 or TRS2009.

To create content I have around 50 reference books sitting on the shelf many are hardbacks. I have a couple of memberships in modelling groups plus a certain amount of commerical software. My person view is $30 for TRS2009 is far less than I spend per year on content creation, the end user has a responsibility not to waste my time chasing down intemittant problems in an obsolete version of Trainz.

If its error free in TRS2009 it will probably run in TRS2004.

Personally I'd prefer it if you spent the time creating additional content rather than testing content in UTC and other early versions.

John thank you for your opinion. Believe me, I have considered dropping the 04 compatabilty for just those very reasons.

The engines that I've already made WERE compatable in 04 until I simply updated them, nothing major or earth shattering. So it's a mysery to me why they stopped working in 04!

Yes, I could spend my time troubleshooting this, and probably will, (just "bent" that way I suppose), but if I cannot determine cause within reason, I'll probably drop the 04 compatability.

I really do need to UPGRADE my engines, (09 compatability...) instead of downgrading but when I originally made my engines, I found it interesting just how many out there still run 04! I really didn't want to deny them.

Again, if my updated engines didn't work in 04 before, I wouldn't be doing this. And thank you for your opinion.

And by the way, although I don't see it today, I looked up Trainz 04 on Amazon, (I believe) the other day and they had copies going for > $50 US!! THAT is what I was refering to by saying I wasn't paying "full price". Thanks for letting me know what Auran wants for it, but I have an offer now that can't be beat!
