Vista or Windows XP

I am thinking of purchasing a new computer since mine is 5 or 6 years old. I just ordered Trainz 2009. Does Trainz run better with Vista or XP? I know Vista uses a lot of memory so if I have 4 gig of memory with Vista, would that be OK for Trainz?

Trainz runs better with XP, Vista has a bit more of an overhead.

.... UNless you have built a lightning fast PC with 6MB or more of memory and running the new Intel Core I7 chips which are 30% to 40% faster when running graphically intense stuff. I had one built for a friend. We are running Windows Vista 64 Bit for max performance. With all of the performance sliders pulled to the right for maximum load and turning shadows on, the Toronto Rail Lands route in TRS2006 runs flawlessly. It is a very complex route which really tests the computer.

I recently updated from running Trainz 2006 on a 5 yr old computer with just 512MB of RAM and XP to Trains 2006 and 2009 on a Dell XPS 420 (quad core) with 4GB of RAM and Vista Home Premium. The difference is like chalk and cheese - the experts will tell you that when comparing XP and Vista on identical machines, XP will win for speed but in my upgrade (and yours) the machines are very far from identical.

Running the same Trainz 2006 layout/session side by side on the two machines is no contest. My new machine is now the preferred platform. The Trainz 2009 performance (after switching to OpenGL) is the same or better than Trainz 2006 on my new machine.

Only custom built computers come with XP, Vista with 4GB runs fine.
Intel Core I7 do not run 30-40% faster unless you run a server, edit video, or do high end 3D renders, every thing else is 1-5% faster at the most. Also cost a lot more.

I've setup my PC to dual boot XP and Vista and can access the same installation of TRS2006 from either OS, and for me Vista runs better than XP.

Vista generally tends to handle files better than XP, so TRS caches and runs a little more smoothly. I definately notice a difference when dealing with large numbers of dependencies in CMP!

I also used to have the dreaded 'choppy' sound issues under XP. I tried everything to fix it - different drivers, hardware acceleration settings, disabling on-board sound and using a soundcard instead - nothing worked. Under Vista though, sounds works the way it should straight out of the box.

Overall, I'm completely happy with the way TRS runs under Vista.

Cheers - Brian
