Virtualizers (again): Trainz not working at all in Virtualbox

As I already stated in this post:

I'm unable to run Trainz in Sun's Virtualbox on a Mac OS X host. While it works fine (although, of course, in low complexity scenarios) in Parallels 4 (my preferred virtualizer) there's no way to have Trainz running in Virtualbox.
VB has OpenGL support since long time buttextures are not loaded (please note: Guest Additions for Win XP/SP2 where installed in Safe Mode boot as requested by the manual) neither in my OS X host nor on an Ubuntu 9.04 host (the latter on a Dell Precision 4400 notebook).
In DirectX mode Trainz is all a mess of graphics and text (but DirectX id just experimental in the latest revision).
Anybody was more lucky?
Any suggestion? Why does Trainz seem to work better in most cases in DirectX than OpenGL although OpenGL is the basic choice in the preferences?
TIA
Simon Julian
