Video & Loco

I’m new to Trainz. I bought Tranz 2009 builders from online download, installed it with no problems, ran great. A week later I bought Trainz 2010EE DVD. When I loaded 2010 I loaded it alongside 2009, not as a standalone. There is a ton of jerky slow performance problems, so I’m going to upgrade my video card... My system profile is XP pro, P4 3.60 Hz, 3.60GHz, & 2.86 GB RAM. My video card is:
Radeon X850 XT 256 256-BIT. I am thinking to a Radeon HD 5550 1 GB 128-BIT. Will this solve my video problems?

One more question I’m trying to make my layout in the US steam era. I’ve downloaded almost all the locos from steammachine.com. When I go into Surveyor most of the steam locos are in red and cannot be loaded. I checked my Content Manager and everything looks ok, and there are no missing dependencies. How can I get the locos to load? My Trainz build is: 44088, so I think I’m up to date on my patches…

Thanks for your help and advice!

Do you have enable compatibility mode checked on. This may make some steam locos work. I have a Radeon HD 4650 with 512MB video ram and it works fine for me.

Did you run TrainzDiag.exe (in the bin directory)? A faster video card would help but I sometimes wonder if the disk i/o rate is a factor as well. Some of the routes are big and take a lot of loading. For example I noticed that my development route suddenly got a lot slower to display when I loaded it up with lots of trees and bushes. I have a I7 920 processor with 6 gb RAM and an ATI 4850 card but my drives are SATA I. According to Microsoft the drives are the limiting factor in my system.

Can't help with the red assets as I have a few of those as well. I thought it was missing textures.

If you want help with faulty steam locos, post their kuid numbers and we'll help.

This wasn't my query but, since you offered, perhaps you could shed some light on this particular faulty steam loco problem.

None of the BR Duchess Class locos or tenders will load for me. The following is typical of the warnings I get:

This is for BR Duchess Class Red kuid2:193148:1133:1 (Alex23)

Warning: Progressive meshes are no longer supported by Trainz. Though these meshes may work in Trainz, it is recommended that you switch to a LOD mesh.
Error: Unable to load mesh file: 'Duchess_BR_Red_shadow\Duchess_BR_Red_shadow.pm'

I think it worked for TS2009.

TIA

Use Open in Explorer on the affected asset. If there is a .im file not a .pm file, you may need to use Content Creator Plus or a text editor to update the file reference (it's easier to use Content Creator Plus for this job, as it will show you where the problem is, then you can click the button with two or three dots next to it to select the correct file before saving and committing.

Thanks

All locos are running! some are still red. In content manager they have a shadow mesh prob. it seem the capatabilty fixed it

You can sort shadow problems out using another of PEV's tools known as Quick Shadows. Its on the same web page as the link posted by Mikej above

I tried that shadow program but I can't find the file to open... any idea where the dir. is?

There is a folder called editting in your 2009 Auran folder. If you have the latest patch (SP4) then the editting folder is inside a folder called 'User Data'

Open the asset that you need to add the shadow to and then in Quick Shadows browse to C:\Program Files\Auran\TrainzSimulator2009\UserData\editting and you will then see the folders for the loco that you opened for edit

I seem to be having the same issues as RockMogrels but with different locos.

Using advice posted earlier I have used PM2IM and QuickShadows to create the replacement IM files in the BR Duchess locos, tenders, bogeys and interior views. However, I now have the following error for the tenders (example kuid:193148:1128) - Error: Attachment point animated-mesh (load) in 'queues\load-coal' was not found. The error didn't exist prior to running QuickShadows and shows up after committing the asset.

(update 2)

I found that changing the link in queues\load-coal to 'default' solved the problem. Though I'm not sure exactly what I fixed and whether there are consequences for what I changed. Is there a tender coal loading animation? I haven't played much with industry assets though I did see the coal truck loading animation in one of the standard Trainz sessions.

Anyway I can now install these locos and their tenders. They look good and the shadows look like loco and tender shadows. So I'm somewhat pleased with my day's efforts. Perhaps I can now go and fix a few other mesh problems.

TIA
Paul
