Using google earth(warning n00b question)

might be back?
Hello,
I was wondering how to use google earth in TRS06? I am wondering because I would like to make a prototypical route set in Honesdale, PA. (the birthplace of the American RR.) I saw a thread about using something about transDEM but I am a poor college kid and can't afford it. Is transDEM the only way to put google earth into trs?

What I need are the elevations and hills in the area. Any help is appriciated. If I can't use google earth, does anyone know where I can find a DEM of the area?

Sorry if the question is a little choppy.

Thanks in advance

Hi, jade,
There is a freeware version that can be used, although it's a bit more cumbersome than TransDEM.
Check out this tutorial on DEM/HOG with MicroDEM.
http://freepages.misc.rootsweb.ance...rrainGeneration/Computer-generatedTerrain.htm
You need to set it up as shown, although the procedure for importing into 06m involves setting the desired assets on the desktop, then importing and committing with CMP.
Do a forum search of HOG to find out more.

Thank you very much. Very useful. I am indebted to you lol. One quick question though. How do you merge DEMs in MicorDEM. The tutorial mentions it but unfourtunatly the link to the auran forum on how to do it is broken. I think it was from the old forum.

Actually I have another question. I have imported it but for some reason the tiger image doesn't really want to show up. just a faint dark line here and there. It shows up sort of in wireframe mode.

if i search for HOG nothing comes up. Unfourtunatly i realized that even if I got the DEM working it leaves out the part that was going to give me issues anyway so I have decided just to do it the old fashion way. THanks for the help anyway. sorry for kinda wasting your time, but at least i have the knowlege if i need it.

save up your pennys and get Trans Dem
if a silly old fellow like me can get it working there's hope for all

Google Earth does show the altitude where the pointer is along the bottom edge. It's not accurate, but it's a good rough guide.
I did a route by hand from Topo maps, and later by DEM/HOG. The DEM map was better, but not enough to worry me. The hand made maps can be fine if you have the time to build them.
MicroDEM has a button on the toolbar labeled "In<->Out" right beside the one with a picture of a Tiger. The Merge function is in there.
If you want to play with MicroDEM some more, let us know and we'll see what we can do.

Honesdale

Have you checked the DEM's at Fishlipsatwork on GUARC. some DEM routes are up in that general area outside of Honesdale. NY-Phila, Scranton, Allentown...

Also with HOG/Tiger data lines...I have a way of simplifying importing the HOG colors from Trainsluver.com
