US History Question

My routes are from 1880 to 1965 and I like to collect engines from that time frame.

I know that almost all steam was gone by 1965. So I have no problem knowing if a steam engine will work on my layouts or not.

My problem is diesels. I don't know which one were before 1965 and need some help.

I know the F7s and the RS3s were out by then. What other Diesels were out before 65 or 70 at the latest.

Thanks for the information.

Dave

Actuslly there wwre still some f7's in use in 1965 because I used to watch them then. I was a senior in high school at the time. Most of the E8's and 9's were still in use during the 60's. but the early GP's and SD's were disappearing then (GP-7, GP-9, SD-7, SD-9.) I think that era also saw the last of the earlier SW's as well.

EMD produced a lot of diesels in that time frame, even going back to the late 40s and early 50s, such as the SD7, SD9, GP7 and GP9, all built between 1949 and 1959. The SD28 was built between 1958 and 1963; the SD35 was produced between 1964 and 1966. The SD38 ran between May of '67 and October of '71.

In additon to the GP7/9, EMD also had the GP20, GP30 and GP35, which had production runs that ranged from as early as 1959 (the GP20) to as late as 1966 (GP35).

One of the more popular units, the SD40, saw almost 1300 units hit the rails between 1966 and August of 1972. Eight months before the end of the SD40 production run, the SD40-2 started its own impressive run, with almost 4,000 units built between Jan. '72 and Oct. '89.

There are a myriad of these locos on the DLS, as well as third-party sites.

In many cases, these early diesels are still running. PanAm Railways (Guilford) is still running SD40s and SD40-2s. The New Hampshire Northcoast runs GP9s, and Guilford has a couple of GP9s for yard work.

You might want to try The Diesel Shop at

http://www.thedieselshop.us/

It has the most comprehensive listing of North American diesel locomotives I've seen on the Internet, complete with Date of manufacture, manufacturer, specs, and illustrations.

Somewhere I have a first edition Diesel Spotters Guide tha would answer all your questions. Somewhere.
In the mean time I will let you know what Diesels Western Pacific got after 1965 so you will know not to use them, perhaps.

SW1500 in 73.
GE U23B in 72.
GP40 in 66.
GE U30B in 67.

They had GP35 before 65.

SD18 started to appear in 1960
SD24 in 1958
(SD18 ad 24 don't exist yet in the world of trainz yet...)
SD9,GP9 from 1954
DDA40Xs came out 1969 apparently
SD45 in 1965
SD40 in 1966
Alco's last diesels (C series, RS series, S series,) were built in the 60s
Most of GE's U series were introduced in mid-60s to early 70s
