UP's/SP's West Colton Yard To Barstow

Buzz313th

Absolute Hack
I just started a project that looks like it may take a while....:hehe: So I was hoping to find some people who might be interested in joining the team.

The project is a Trans Dem prototypical route from the Union Pacific/Southern Pacific West Colton Yard, to the BNSF Barstow Yard. This passes right through the Cajon Pass. I have compiled all of the 10 meter DEMS and high rez tiles to build from, for the entire route Colton to Barstow and have just started on the Colton Yard. I don't expect to be done any time soon, so I am making it in chunks. Right now, the first step is Colton to the BNSF San Bernardino Yard.

I am laying track and the Freeways down on top of the Google Earth Generated Tiles right now... Here is a few pics of some of the work with the High Rez Tiles so you can see the accuracy I am trying to achieve.

Looks good Buzz, "fishlipsatwork" has done a DEM terrain from Colton to Barstow you may be able to add your yard to that, it might save you a lot of work. when you have it done I may add you yard to my cajon pass, it looks better than mine

Cheers

That look awesome, Buzz.
Theres one thing, though...
I dont understand how you make, import and use the google tiles.
I would love to know.

Keep up you fabulous work.

I appreciate, but I have already done all the dem work and reference textures from multiple sources for the entire route. The dem's are 1/3 arc second, so they are the highest rez available to the public at this point I believe. All of the ref textures are jpg georefed shots from 400 feet in google earth. I also have Topo Maps georefed to the entire route as well in multiple resolutions. So in terms of geographical research I think I'm doing pretty good. I am currently looking for sources of vector info for the track and freeways, which would allow me to have pretty accurate ideas of the rail cuts and fills. I also live in the LA area, so it is pretty feasable for me to get some good reference photos when needed.

If your interested that would be good. I can supply all these resources and all you would need is trainz. All the ground tiles and dem info will be included in the route and accesable in surveyor.

WOW!! Most impressive.

Way too kind... I have only spent about 4 hours building and you must realise that the tiles are just reference material to place the 3d objects on and use as colors for texture reference. The tiles will be removed after each section of the route is done.

There is this fabulous utility called, "TransDem", it does the import and has all the docs to teach you how to use GoogleEarth to make georefed tiles and textures. Just do a search on this forum for "Trans Dem 1.2".

Lars, I would really like to have someone like you working on this. If you think you may have some time over the next year, please lemme know.

Very Cool....

Ok so Lars and KcDowdy I really appreciate .... Consider this project yours as well.

I would like to figure out the best way to go about doing this.

Do we all work on the same areas or do we split the responsabilities, such as, one person lays track, the other does textures, scenery etc.. Whats the best way to do this? I'm all ears. This will be the first time I have ever built a route with a team. What do you guys enjoy doing most?

Whats the best way to send the route back and forth? Do we rename it with a date/time stamp so we know what the latest revision is? If we work on different sections of the route, how do we keep continuity with one another?

Emails on the way....

I have seen your work and it would be an honor to have you involved.
