Uploading Video To YouTube?

Hi all, I have used FRAPS to record a very short clip of one of my routes, about 1.5 minutes in length. FRAPS records in AVI format and the size of the video is 556 MB but when I try to upload it, it says it will take 218 minutes!! Am I doing something wrong or is this normal?

Use a lower grade extension / And anyone notice the quality settings of Youtube

Lewisner, it sounds like you're on dial up, but try not to use AVI, as it's too big. Try converting the video etiher to WMV, or the suitable MPEG/MPG. Youtube suggests which are the best formats to use.

Iis it me, or has Youtube adjusted their quality settings, ie: lower quality using the same format as was previously?

Thanks for the suggestion guys. I am on fast broadband but it is clearly a problem with the size of the file.Somebody suggested downloading Windows Movie Maker and using that to convert it but WMM crashes when I try to do it.
I use Flickr as my host but it has a 500MB limit and I would guess Photobucket is the same, though I will have a look.

At over 500MB it is wayyyyy to big for anywhere but your computer ;)

There are plenty of free AVI to MPG converters out there, just google for them, just checked to make sure and there are quite a few :D

Cheers David

Just to keep you guys up to speed. I followed Pommies suggestion and searched for AVI converters.Downloaded the free version of the first one I came to and it works. However, bearing in mind that FRAPS will only record a maximum of 10 minutes even with the payware version (why?) the AVI converter free version will only convert 60% of the video so I am stuck with a 4.5 video.I've uploaded this to YouTube but it seems slightly fuzzy so I am reading up on this, again it's very complex.
Last night I downloaded another AVI to MPEG4 converter but not only does it place a large logo in the centre of the video but there is a problem with red, green and blue streaks on the screen.
It's definitely a learning curve lol!

Downloading Windows Movie Maker (WMM)??
I thought WMM (or similar program) would have already been pre-installed on a computer purchase.

Lewisner, do you have some sort of digital camera? If so, did it come with a DVD/CD (or similar) disk with a program on it?

Or do you have Nero Express installed?

"Red_Rattler" I have Windows Movie Maker installed but when I open it, it comes up with "WMM has stopped working" so I can't do anything with it.My PC is nearly 4 years old and didn't come with WMM pre installed.
My previous PC came with the trial version of NERO and I later bought the full version but have lost it through various PC crashes along with the product key but I suppose I could ask them to resend it.
I used to use WXP 32 Bit but I now use W7 64 bit so that may be why the trial version of NERO isn't working.
I have a nearly 7 year old Fujifilm digital camera with a disc - is that any use?
Cheers.

Lewis,

You need record your video at the highest level that your system can handle without stuttering. This will ensure your video is at the highest quality-level before compressing it for upload. By doing this, there is less loss, meaning less distortion.

I recommend that you look into a program such as Pinnacle Studio. I was able to upgrade from an ancient license we had for about $50.00 US. I don't know what the current version is, or the price, but I do know the program is much more reliable than Windows Live Movie Maker, which burned me badly when I used it for a school project. At the very last minute, the program would freeze as I was burning some video clips I put together for my Comparative Arts Class! The program went as far as to freeze up my system, forcing me to reboot it.

Here are some video clips I put together last year using Pinnacle Studio. They were recorded at HiDef, and then down-sampled for upload. The final video format was MPEG-4, which plays back very nicely.

They're not rail or Trainz related, but only to show you the video quality. With Pinnacle, you can adjust the video size and compression levels so you can achieve the best-quality along with the video format. This is unlike WMM, which only locks you into the WMV format, which really doesn't compress down well.

Nero and Roxio, which were once my gold standards, gave me a hard time a few years ago. Roxio gave me a hard time when I had to reinstall it. They treated me like a criminal, and Nero was heavy on my system with all the services.

Today I use a free CD/DVD burner called ImageBurn, which is available from www.downloads.com This program is easy to use, and works on virtually all versions of Windows, including Windows NT 4.0!

What I used to do was to run trainz in a window @ 800x600 with fraps set to record at half resolution, giving me a 400x300 video, giving better frame rates than full screen, also as this does not require any resizing you only lose quality in the compression stage which you have full control over :D

hmmm will have to install 06 or maybe even 04 again to see if I can do some video in Linux :hehe:

Cheers David

There's another problem which is that when recording the video originally I had the Draw Distance set to minimum so as to improve the FPS.However this resulted in trees and scenery popping into existence then disappearing which I know looks ridiculous to someone who doesn't run Trainz. So, I set DD to maximum BUT now I get a problem where the train simply freezes for a few seconds with the engine sound hammering away.FPS are diabolical, as low as 5.
It's kind of ironic that my mobile phone is a Sony Ericsson Satio with a 12 megapixel camera and I have found that it records video from the PC or TV screen with almost perfect quality! The only bad thing with this that I would have to hold it completely still for the whole course of the video and when it comes to photos the file sizes are HUGE.

The freezing is caused by the program trying to load all the data in from the distance. I had the same issue when I used Fraps.

Try lowering your recording resolution so there's less hit on your system.

@lewisner: well reason why fraps files are so big is, because the file is raw and it can't compress it while you're recording. If any of you guys are using Fraps, i recommend you download virtualdub and compress 556mb to about 20mb or less but you get to keep the same quality as the raw video from Fraps (Note: this depends on how you set virtualdub and what video encoder you use to compress the video/file).

I tried using Windows Movie Maker, but the quality i get from it is terrible. In my opinion Virtualdub has kept the same quality as the actual raw video from Fraps.

p.s virtualdub is an open source program so try it out. Wanna convert the file from a .avi to lets say mp4 or flv? try real players converter it can convert any file extension to lets say 3gp.

I'm still banging away at this but it is very dispiriting. I've tried another MPEG4 converter called imToo but it has the same problem as one of the others - namely Red,Green and Blue lines extending halfway up the screen.Does anybody know what causes this?

Dont convert it use windows movie maker if you dont have sony vegas or something, and compress it. Fraps doesnt compress.

edit: Just saw you have a problem with WMM, download sony vegas trial perhaps.

In case anyone is interested I have Real Player SP and bought it.The others had the problem with the RGB lines or were too expensive/complicated or outright didn't work such as NERO and WMM. Thanks for all the advice.
