Upgrading

Now T:ANE I can get into
I've been out of the loop for a few years, I believe that Trainz Classics had just been released when I left, but I'm still on Trainz 2006. In my absence, a wealth of great content seems to have been created for subsequent versions, so I suppose I should look into upgrading relatively soon. What are the benefits of Trainz 2012 vs. 2010? I can acquire the latter at about half of the price of the former. Are both versions backward-compatible with TC/TRS06/TRS04 (And TS2010 in the case of the former) content?

TS2010 has more built-in routes and Compatibility Mode, allowing you to run older content that don't work out-of-the-box with later versions. TS12 has lots of great content, Doppler Effect, and usually a farther draw distance) than TS2010 (in other words, a major performance enhancement.) With either version, about 90% of content is backward compatible without the need for fixing (or, in the case of TS2010, running in Compatibility Mode.) Of the remaining 10%, about 99.99% of that, literally, is fixable with some simple tools and some time.

I have noticed lately that a lot of folks are making new assets or "upgrading" existing ones and ***needlessly*** setting them to ONLY work with TS12, even though, in most cases, they can be backdated to work as far back as TS2009. So, at this stage of things, upgrading to TS12 is probably the best way to ensure content compatibility.

P.S. Just make sure your computer meets the minimum specs of TS2010 or TS12. It's also possible to add a TS2010 installation to TS12, so you can have the best of both worlds.

I'd say make sure your comp meets the recommended specs at least.
Stuttering gameplay is a common complaint here from folk with underpowered comps.
