upgrade or not to upgrade that is the question?!

Hey

It seems 06 is now out of date and i cant get the support any more from auran :(

so maybe Im thinking its time to upgrade and 09 & 10 versions arent a bad price atm so I ask do I upgrade or dont I?

what Im really concerened with is that I have a couple of large projects that are unfinished and I dont want to loose them so can routes and content Ive made/aquired for 06 be used in 09 & 10

also is 09/10 much more demanding on the system?

1- go for 2010 build 44088 (no multi player). It's got compatibility mode so most of your 2006 stuff will run.
2- What are your system specs and please don't say it's a laptop.

Fran's advice is spot on, I wouldn't bother with 2009 at this point.

Oh, and Fran? Laptop!:p

Hope this helps

I faced this problem too when I thought about upgrading.

I would recommend saving a second copy of your local folder to somewhere like a pen drive, cd, dvd, external hard drive or a floppy disk (if small enough) :).

When I upgraded to 2009, I was running a low spec PC which ran it fine. Recently (as i'm sure a few members will know), I upgraded my graphics card to a 1 GB Nivida card. If you plan to run 2009 SP4 or 2010 then a 1 GB card (in my opinion) is a necessity for running highly detailed layouts.

My Pc Specs are: (It's a custom built one)
Intel Celeron R 2.45 GHZ Dual core
Msi Nivida GTS 450 1GB
4GB DDR2 Ram
Windows XP Home SP3
And I run Trainz 2009 SP4 Build 44653 (Add ons: Treez, Classic Cabon City. 20GB of downloaded content.) with hardly any faults or slowing when moving around.:D

EDIT: Fran, doesn't 2009 have compatability mode too?
And laptops... hmm seems to be a thing well debated around here :hehe:

Hope this helps

Regards
Johan ;)

I know, I know, it's a pet hate of mine.
Some poor souls just spent good money and he's expecting trainz to run well on it. Then he comes here asking for help. Put it in a bucket of water and put it out of it's pain.:'(
Or spend serious dosh and get a gaming one.:hehe:

My pc isnt bad its a couple of years old now but was damn good when I got it!

Ive got 500Gb in my primarry HDD and 1Tb in my secondary
Running windows 7 on a Athlon Phenom 8450 Tri-Core (2.1Ghz) with just over 4Gb of RAM
Graphics wise its got a Nvidia G-Force 9500 GS HD card

and how do i know if i get 10 its going to be the 44088 version?

and it is indeed a desk top not a laptop!

N33

No idea about 2009, SP3+4 bring you to 2010 levels I think.
Whereabouts in Preston are you, I'm in Leyland.

The card needs therapy for 2010, there are patches to get you to 44088 if it's not already (should be though).
Never heard of a triple core cpu but it should be ok.

Yay another Local trainzer

I'm near the capital centre (if you know where that is) :D.

Seems as though I have found another local trainzer ;)

Ah sorry my bad :o

I can never remember how it's spelt, so I just spell it as I would pronounce it.:)

Just want to mention to heed N33's advice about backing up your work - multiple times and on multiple formats. Back up all you 2006 stuff to a pen drive AND DVD's, if you have a DVD burner. Back up the absolutely irreplaceable stuff like routes by doing the above AND emailing them to yourself. Too many people lose months or years of work.

As for your specs, the CPU could be faster but otherwise it should do a decent job. Also, don't forget you should be able to keep and run TRS2006 as well (although, please, back up anyway if you cherish your content) so if you have trouble getting stuff to work in TS2010, you'll still have 06 handy.

He's already got Win 7, so it's no great shakes putting a card in or even swapping CPU's.
Install 2010 as a stand alone then it won't interfere with the 06 install, and preferably in it's own partition.
If you do get a card stick with nvidea, go to their site and you will see 3 types of cards, so so , adequate and extreme gaming, you don't need telling which you need, make a note of the cards and start looking for prices about the net.

Just to supplement the above, don't overload your power supply and be aware that the heavy duty gaming cards usually require two full height slots on the MB.

some great advice guys, I have installed two hdd, one which is the origonal (drive C) whch has all my programs and basic windows stuff on it and then a second one for stuff, 06 is installed on my primary so if install 10 on my secondary it souldount interfere with 06 should it?

It all depends if you want to play any other PC games on your desktop, as well as Trainz, as your CPU certainly looks a little underpowered, minimum specs for TS12 for instance is 3.0 GHz, if not, then just be aware of some of the resource hungry layouts, including the built-in ones in TS2010-12, such as ECML, might affect performance.

And no, if you put different versions on different drives, I have TC3, TS12 and TS2010 all installed on my 3 drives currently, then you should be OK, just ensure whatever you download goes into the correct CMP.

Cheerz. ex-railwayman.
