I think they used star types for small steam engines like 0-6-0 switchers and as for the bigger locos such as a 4-8-4 northern, I think they had handcock 3-chime whistles but I'm not sure,maybe someone else here can shed some light on this problem!
I while ago I read somewhere that, at least during the Harriman era, that freight locos (2-8-0's, etc.) used different types of whistles than passenger locos (4-6-2's, etc.). I also wanted to know waht types of whistles these used...
