Underground stations and terrain cuts.

Hi guys. I'm fairly new to Surveyor and I have just bought Trainz 2010. I have 2 questions at the moment:

1. I want to create an underground station but cannot figure out how to do it. I can lower the terrain, add my station but what about a roof? I've seen plenty of screenshots of underground stations with roofs but I can't find out how to do it.

2. Is there a way to create a straight cut into the terrain? I want to use a wall alongside the track and have the terrain behind it butt right up against it but I can't seem to cut a straight path... It always puts a slope on the edges.

I will probably have more questions as I go but that's all for now. :P

I'm not sure about underground stations, but Andi06's Station and Tunnel kits might do it. You can find them here.

In answer to your second question, you'll probably need a retaining wall spline from the Download Station. There are a few on there.

Although underground stations look like they have no roof (i am assuming you are using magicland's set) they do! Just like the tunnels. If you go to the level of the station you will see the roof.

As for placing them, you can just add them and then lower their hight, then connect the rails.

I am pretty sure that it is out of the games ability to create a vertical wall, however you can create the most vertical wall you can and then add a spline of a wall on, this also looks more realistic. When was the last time you went through a terrain cut that deep that had ground for the edges! It is much more plausible that there is some kind of brick wall.

Good luck with your problem!

I created an underground station by using a subway tunnel station underneath some concrete surface-splines. The tunnel/station has the normal-faced surfaces so that it appears to be underground, and the over-splines fill in the hole so that it is underneath a plaza with another station above.

terrain cuts and retaining walls

When you look for a retaining wall spline on the DLS, look for one that is not just a vertical wall but has a top surface as well. THis eliminates the need to have a separate spline for the top (although you might want to do that if you don't like the look of the top surface of the retaining wall splines). Here are three that I use:
Retaining wall Modernstone by james73
Retaining_Wall_01 by Blue_Sky_Interactive
Retaining_Wall_02 by tramsoller

Which one you use will depend on what you want the top surface to look like, but the advantage of using these is that you won't be able to see the ground slope (unavoidable) since it's covered up by the top surface.

Another way to accomplish the same thing are by using building base obects (big ones) like Building base or Building base_b by mrmom.

With a little practice you can build not just underground stations but multilevel stations and open-cut rail or road underpasses.

I also used these retaining walls along the edge of the slope to square it off from a natural slope to a manmade surface.

The building bases work great too. I used those as well as the concrete splines where I could in the station area. When I was done, I now have a plaza with a station and some streets with houses on top of the underground platforms for the station.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm trying some of the pieces you guys listed and slowly getting the hang of it.

I have another question. I just reinstalled Windows and I'm wondering if I should install the earlier versions of Trainz I have and then install the new ones over the top. I have UTC, 2004, 2006, TC, 2009 and 2010. If it's worth installing the previous ones, how far back should I go? 2006? 2004?

Thanks guys.

You don't need to install the old ones. Everyting you need will be in the newest version (2010) and any custom content for the old ones will work with newer versions

Would installing the old versions mean that I wouldn't need to download some of the custom content? I know there are some things built into both '04 and '06 that aren't built into '10.

The content that you would get by installing the old ones will only be available on the old ones so you would either have to work in an old one with some extra content (but older) OR a newer version with some content that won't work in the older ones but is missing some of the older content

Ok thanks for that. I wanted to know if you could install the new one over the top of the old one which seems a little difficult according to what I've read and been told.

I just stick with '10 for now. Thanks.
