How on earth do you un-archive an asset??

I delete the archive, I even delete the asset and download it again, but no matter what, it still shows up as 'archived'.

Hi jytte, This is one of the problems with using Archive files I mention.

For example you Archive a layout under its name and it will Archive ALL the dependencies for that layout. You then Archive another layout and again it will Archive ALL the dependencies for that layout. Now in both layouts you may/will have common files (buildings etc) so you now have some content in both Archive files.

What you have to do is go to your settings and where it shows all the Archive (I do not have 2006 open at the moment) and in there remove/delete the Archive files. You are not actually removing the content, but telling 2006 that file is no longer used. Eventually you will find where the content is installed. Once you have found this Archive file then you will need to delete that file from your folder where you have your Archive files and then also delete the content from your "local" folder. With the remaining content now not in a Archive file you can then create another Archive file.

Hope I have explained this the correct way, but if you are still having problems let me know and I will open 2006 to explain it again, hopefully better then this :hehe: .

Have you deleted the archive from the list in the settings pop-up. That is what you have to remove so that CMP does not know about the archive and will delete it from its database. It is not actually necessary to delete the physical archive. I have two sets on my computer, the original ones I made and a revised set archived by type. By deleting the first set from the settings table, CMP only sees the second set but the first set is still there if I need it.

Thank you both,

I just had another crash, so it took me a while to get back to this.

I thought I had looked everywhere, DUH. Once I found the archive list in the settings, everything makes sense, and I'm able to un-archive the way I want.

Sorry to be such an airhead, and thanks again.

You can pick and choose what it archives. You can have it include all, some, or none of the dependencies with the archive.

Hi Mike, yea I knew that much, just had to wipe the cobwebs off the brain to figure out the rest, with kind help.

Meanwhile, auran is down under again, sending CMP into another spin, just can't win today. Maybe it's in Australia by now, or is it China? :hehe:

BTW: just in case I missed another obvious move, is there some way of "isolating" "items NOT archived". I've set up a tab for "local but NOT built-in", but CMP won't let me choose "NOT" when it comes to archive. Would be a nice way of keeping an eye out for stuff I've downloaded, but not (yet) archived.

Given my recent adventures, I now want to have cdp's and archives up the gazooo, in addition to my "local"-backup.

As you've found, not all of the search criteria allow the 'NOT' function. I've not seen any logic as to which ones do and don't yet though ;)

Hi Jytte,

To filter non archive do this:

Search
Location Local + NOT Location Archive

I call this NON ARCHIVE

Personally I dislike the Archive function because it is hard to determine which archive an asset is in when you have multiple cmpa fies on CD or DVD, bearing in mind that max size of any archive should not exceed 2GB otherwise search MB counter runs backwards. Also a limitation on 32 bit OS I believe.

However you can use the cmpa files to transfer between versions TRS2006 upwards.

As you get up in to the mega GB size local file, I have >250GB at moment, it might be less bother to setup an USB2 external HD say 500GB or 750GB as a backup media rather than using myriads of CD or DVD discs. Reasonably cheap these days.

I know this is an old post but better than starting a new one.

How does one get "Not archive" in CMP.

I am archiving after a fresh install of TRS2006 and in prep for TRS2009. Can anyone help me please so I know I got everything archived.

CMP
Search Panel
Choose Location filter from drop down menu.
It will default to Location Local
Change Local to Archive
Click on not equal button on left of Local Archive. This button is a toggle so you can switch back and forth between archived and not archived. Voila! Then move what you are going to archive into the archiver panel.

When making archives keep them under 2GB in size (32bit system limit) else the archive will truncate and you wont get all the assets you think you have archived.

In TS2009 this problem has been overcome by splitting the archive into ~2GB sections.

Think carefully how you are going to organise your archive. Bear in mind that you want to add assets to an archive later and you need to know which archive it goes in. Best method I believe is by kuid groups, with multiple groups in a 2GB file making sure you sort kuids in numerical order before archiving. And as you are doing a complete transfer to TS2009 do not select dependencies as this will bloat the archive with multiple copies.

Remember that you will NOT be able to:
a. Archive Builtins but as you are going to TS2009 thats not a problem as the TRS2006 Builtins are supplied.
b. You will also see in the archive results that certain other assets could not be archived because they are locked. Generally these are in the TRS Builtins.

If your archives are on hard drive you will be able to access them from TS2009 and instal in the usual fashion.

You might consider an alternative for transfer to TS2009 if you have a limited number of assets and that is:

a. Open for edit some assets in TRS2006 and in TS2009 follow the instructions for Import Content. TS2009 local folder is organised differently from TRS2006 and assets have to be converted in TS2009. This can take some time and generally can takes several hours at best or several days if you have a lot of assets..

Further to the above, I use three filters; location=local, NOT location=archive and NOT builtin. This will then only list your local unarchived items.

Yes I do now too.

But another thought is that as large scale HD are pretty cheap why compress anyway. I have two x 1TB Raid 0+1 as my main HD for Trainz and the USB2 750GB HD for backup. You can get 1TB USB2 as well and In long run cheaper than burning DVDs.
