UK Screenshots (Hi Res Version)

Not wishing to detract from or criticize some recent screenshots here, but, I have to say, those loco models from Paulz Trainz are diabolical, especially the SR Schools and GWR models - and unbelievably, you've paid for them!

True enough Rob. A lot of Paul's models are full of careless errors, use a very odd texturing system that's hard to do anything with and often have incorrect dimensions, but they are cheap and where nothing else exists they are better than a poke in the eye. I know the Churchward experimental Atlantic isn't perfect, but show me somebody else who has made one and I'll buy theirs. I've done a little texture fixing on 'Ivanhoe' and it now has much better sound files and a better engine spec file. It now drives well and the brakes work realistically and for now it will do until something better from the pre-WW1 GWR era turns up.

Besides it was a Christmas present and for all its faults I like it.

Paul fills a niche in that he will make whatever you want him to make. He takes pressure off other content creators who might otherwise be inundated with requests for locos and rolling stock.

What has surprised me is I haven't seen much competition in the payware market from places such as Indian or even Africa. There are certainly enough people with computer and 3D modelling skills there and there should be enough money involved to make a reasonable living for them.

Cheerio John

Yes exactly John. I own a good few of Paul's models and they are all models that no-one else makes. His older models from TS2004 and TS2006 days need to be chosen from his website with care since they are a bit of a mixed bag, but his later and more recent models are a lot better. The other thing is that Paul has always been quick to fix anything I've purchased from him if there's something wrong with it and I've lost count of the number of times when I've purchased a locomotive from him and he's given me a couple more for free.

Excellent screenshots at #17537 Epo.

Trip working on the Hopewood Tramway. You may have noticed that I really like tram engines.

re post #17539 johnwhelan and #17540 KotangaGirl.

I echo your comments, pray excuse this screenshot of a "Paulz Trainz" SP Cabforward in this UK screenshot thread.
I made a few alterations to his model and I feel that if you pick your model, you get an very acceptable loco for your dollars.
I have had no problems with it and as you say, he makes models that no one else makes.
Many thanks for his LNER signal boxes.

That is a nice screenshot Ken. Trains crossing bridges always make for good snaps.

Perhaps it's time I went back to my Middlevales layout and ran my Paulz Trainz LMS Garratts about again and took some pictures of them.

I have to say it's a little unfair to judge him on these models. He's been creating for the Trainz community since I was a child, and the GWR models IIRC date from that era (2004-5ish). Back then they were the bee's knees. His newer stuff isn't that bad, the NER locos that have been commissioned recently are okay if not quite up to the standards of edh6's and Camscott's stuff. I used to say he does models that no-one else would think of, although I really didn't see all the freeware detailed Scottish locomotives coming at that point, so anything's possible!

I have to say it's a little unfair to judge him on these models...

I think it's fair comment seeing as he's asking for money for them! Any one person e.g. Paulz or any organization e.g. N3V that sell their wares for our hard earned brass isn't above criticism! If it's freeware then we should be extremely grateful for those models that freeware builders give us! Ironically, the freeware, in particular the UK pre-grouping freeware, is far superior in quality to any current payware offerings!!!

Paulz models have improved over the years, his latest ECJS rolling stock, some of which I have, is excellent but that's only because of borderreivers commissioning and critical eye on these models. Again, Paulz recent NER/NE signal boxes are excellent (apart from the inclusion of his hideous driver and fireman figures!) but they're another of borderreivers commissions!

Rob.

Edit: This is probably the wrong thread to argue the ethics and quality of offerings by payware creators vs. freeware creators!

Yes I agree Rob, the UK screenshot thread isn't the place for such a discussion.

Having too much fun on my WIP version of Valleyfields.

If anyone knows how to change out Auran's old '2Track Wood' trackwork for something better without making an utter mess or having to relay some 30 scale miles of double track mainline from scratch I'll be very interested to hear from you.

re post #17548 KotangaGirl

Hello Anne, try "R3 UK Bullhead Track" by Rumour3 KUID 79563 all on the DLS.

Give the "Bulk asset update/replace" tool in Surveyor (Main Menu) a try, should replace the old track all in one go!

Cheers, Ken

Thanks for the suggestions Malc and Ken, but the problem with the old '2 track Wood' track is that it's mounted on an invisible bridge and can't be bulk changed using the 'Replace Assets' menu option. However I have found an invisible bridge mesh with the right spacing that I can use to attach any type of track I please. Not quite a one click change over, but at least now I can replace the double track mainline section by section with trackwork that matches the single line sections of the rest of the layout without hopefully too many problems.

re post #17551/2 KotangaGirl

That LRW track looks pretty good, must look at that myself, as for the invisible bridge, try making a clone of it and using a replacement track ,manually replacing the old bridge with your new clone or of course use a completely new bridge.

Cheers, Ken

So far my cloned homemade bridge track is working out just fine Ken. I jumped in at the deep end on Valleyfields by changing the double track through a GCR station that has a junction with a GCR branchline as well as a junction with the GER lines. Only ended up with a bad knot once and I got it all straightened out Ok in the end.

Definitely much better. I'll just work my way around the layout over the next few days and do a bit at a time until it's done.
