81/5 on ECML![]()
It's a class 81. The 85's main bodysides are the same as (or very similar to) those of the class 86s.
The 81/5 is the class and then group (mark) number this can be seen on the class 66 you know how old is by looking at the third number for example 66012 is an orginal group of 66's while 66721 is one that has only just arrived in this in country and is a younger loco.
I'm fully aware of how the TOPS classification system works.
66012 and 66721 have differing sub-classifications to distinguish who it is that leases them - EWS in the case of the former, First GBRf in the case of the latter. It doesn't give an indication of the age of the individual loco - if that was the case 66727 would be newer than 66430.
Incidentally, there isn't (and never has been) a class 81/5 - though I believe the Wembley ECS locos were unofficially referred to as class 81/9, on account of their restricted speed.
