Turning scenery items into products?

Morning Gents (and ladies);

The last couple of days I have been playing around with this. I clone an item, mess about in the config file, and try it out. This morning I was able to put some much darker bundles of ties/sleepers on a 42 ft. flatcar.

I'm wondering about the "mass" thing. Is this something that should be very accurate? I'm guessing this will become important when I finally decide to start driving around my route, and learn how to drive steam locos.

I can have a search to find the weight of a tie. Let's say one weighs 150 lbs. Times 16 would be 2400 lbs/about 1090 kg. Is that the figure I should use for the bundle? I looked in a few config files and to my untrained eye, mass does not seem to be too important.

Maybe this winter I will learn some of the ins and outs of Trainz!

Hi Rick,

I think this can be done just as any item can be turned into a scenery item. You need to first clone the asset (make a copy and it puts your ID on it), then you can edit the pertinent information that turns the item into a scenery item. I did that to an old steam engine and trolley car I wanted for a museum display.

Hee, hee, I guess I should have put "mass" in the "subject" area. I'm wondering how accurate these figures should be. Does it even matter? Do you consider how much weight the car can handle? How much weight is in a consist, etc.? With the ties/sleepers; in surveyor, I can click on the car and put 7 bundles on it. It looks like it might be able to carry 10. I have not tried to add it as a load in the car's config file yet. I'm going to try doing that this morning. The ties seem very easy to work with. They show up on the flat car evenly spaced, facing the right direction, etc. I just have to add them to the cars config file and try them with 10 attachment points. That's all new to me, also. I think it might be a little harder to do. ....but that's how I'm trying to learn, try it, see if it works!

Actually, it does matter. This will help determine the total weight of the consist, and will affect how easy or how difficult it will be to pull the wagon that holds the product.

OK, thanks Shane. I am changing 5 more of the sleeper bundles from scenery items to loads at the moment. I just read a new tie/sleeper weighs about 200 lbs. I think I could barely get one off the ground, but that was 25 years ago! I figured sooner or later mass would be important.
