Turn shadows off on Backgrounds

I'm using some background splines as view blocks for my route. The problem is the background splines are casting shadows. Is there a way to turn shadows off on some objects?

In general I would say no.

I suspect that for individual objects to have user selectable shadows there would have to be some sort of universal "shadow" tag in every config.txt file (e.g. 0 = off, 1 = on). There is already a shadow container but this defines an objects shadow mesh if the creator provided one. The shadow mesh was, if I am correct (and someone will correct me if I am not), made obsolete in TANE(?) when all objects (with a few exceptions) were automatically given shadows even if they did not have a shadow mesh. For example, point of view cameras now have shadows when shown in Surveyor.

PS: Plus how would it look is some houses or trees cast shadows while others did not because their creator had omitted this hypothetical "shadow" tag or set it to OFF?

You can (thankfully) per mesh table entry in the config, but the asset needs to be of trainz build 4.4 or later.

I'm sure everyone know this but Google Site search works better than the forum search. Site search is an advanced google search option.

Use this for the forum Site URL:

Use this for the wiki Site URL:

A proper forum search might look like:
Code:
shadows site:https://forums.auran.com/trainz/

I did a search on each. After the search I bookmarked. Now all I need do is click the bookmark, the search occurs, I need only replace my search term(s) to search for my term. (ie: the bookmark is merely a template holding the proper URL)

Works much better for me anyway.

Another solution that I used for the background shadow problem was to set the time to noon and the latitude to 0 (equator). Of course this may not be ideal because it eliminates the shadow for everything. For me it wasn't a problem because I was modelling an indoor model train layout.

I'm also a model railroad builder. But for me the shadows are one of the bigger highlights of running a model railroad. I particularly like operating early morning and late afternoon when the shadows are most pronounced, for example, during this session (full screen / 1080p):

To the original poster -- I suspect there may be some backgrounds that are shadow free. If you do find any I'd sure like to know. You will find that the brick wall and fascias that I have on the Download Station are configured not to cast a shadow.

Model Railroad layouts confuse me. We want to model a model (layout). But we also don't want the model of the model to be real, like the model. For example, I don't think it rains much on model railroads but on models of the model railroads it does rain. We also have smoke coming from industries. When is the last time you saw an industry smoke on your HO scale layout? And if I had a layout with separating "scene boards" those would cast a showdow on a layout. But we don't want that on the model of the model. Just having fun with all this of course :)

I can't remember the exact words, but a comment about one of my model railroads was along the lines "It's a bit disconcerting to see what is obviously a real railroad running in someone's basement."

I've reconfigured 3 of my MR sky backdrops to be shadow free, they are about to go live on the DLS 'within 24 hours' tm

I will also do the same to my MR walls.

They are for TMR2017 and TANE

As for smoking chimneys (and also moving cars) my real life MR had both of those.
The smoking chimneys were a bit dodgy though, it involved a small heater element and oil :D
Cars were by Faller.

Thank you!

LOL

It's simple. I want it to be very realistic - except when I don't. :-)

No doubt these things can be done but they are highly un-usual. How do you do birds flying, people walking, and rain and fog on your model layout? I think I have seen airplanes flying (on wire). At a recent train show I actually saw a giant octopus climbing a lighthouse. It was a scene from an actual sci-fi movie!
(again- all in fun!)

Well, I used smoke tablets to feed the heater in my childhood railways. Never took one, being dumb enough to believe I would look cool (tough in those days).

Anyhow, the suggested Search construct works well and lots of thanks for that, you weren't just blowing smoke!
