TS2012 Error message

Hi
I often add plain staging boards to the routes I modify, I have started to do this in TS2012 but when I go back into the game at a later time I find I cannot place stock on the track or objects or anything and get a message " Cannot add object as the selected layer is above that of the targeted track "
not got a clue what its on about never had this prob in TRS2006 the boards are at zero height so this does not make sense.
I could only get it to work by deleting all the staging track and relaying it, but I'm not going to do this every time I want to play the game.
Can someone explain ?
Maybe the jump from 2006 to 2012 is too much for me and the learning curve too steep I don't know ?
Cheers

TS2010 and TS12 both have what is called 'layers'. You can have a number of separate layers on which you can add any items you wish. What the error message is telling you is that the track on the layer you are trying to put a train on is of a "higher" layer than the one you are currently using (not physical height). Take a look over on the right side and click the tab that looks like a stack of pancakes. When it opens, you can see all the layers that are available.

Using that particular tab, you can merge any layer into another (which I suspect you might want to do in order to get your tracks and trains on the same 'layer'.

Hi
Thanks for replies. Bill I really don't understand what your saying, jumping from 2006 to 2012 has meant I missed out on a lot of learning !!! I just can't get my head around these laters or what you would use them for ?
As for downloads I've only had the game a week and once when I started up it said downloads available so I downloaded them ? Is this what you are talking about ?
Cheers

Think of layers as a stack of transparent dinner plates. The bottommost plate (called 'route') has your basic terrain and some track. You didn't notice it, but the next time you laid track, someone had put another plate on top of your last one (probably named 'session'). You can see everything under it and you can place items (including more track) on the new plate.

Now, the next time you open Surveyor, you've reverted back to the bottom plate. You want to put a train on track which you clearly see so you try. This fails because Surveyor gives you the error that the rolling stock you are trying to place is on a track on a higher layer (plate).

It can be confusing, but once you get used to layers, they can come in very handy. For instance:

You have very tight quarters and you want to put down a load of content in a small space. What you do is create a new layer (plate) with a new name and go ahead and put your content down. You are able to successfully 'grab' and 'move' your content without interference with the other items which may be in very close quarters with your desired content because they are ON SEPARATE PLATES and cannot be "touched" with your placement and/or movement tools.

Once you have just what you want, you open the layers tab and merge the layer (plate) with the 'route' layer (plate) OR you can "lock" the layer (plate) so nothing can be moved or deleted.

When you get ready to drive a consist on your new route, ALL the layers will show through and present a total route. Session layers are slightly different because they can be activated (or not) making it possible for a basic route to have "seasons" where snow might be present in one session, but flowers present in another -- both are possible with only one basic route.

Thanks, PJ. Happy to help. If you get stuck, post again or drop me a PM and I'll see if I can help. Layers are really neat and can be used even for experimental purposes. By that, I mean you can put items on a named layer and if you don't like the result just delete the layer and all the stuff goes away. If you build on just a single layer, you have to delete things one by one; on a layer, just one click and it's all gone.

No can do - if you do not have a CD key/serial number (which should either be on the back of the manual in a boxed version or in your Planet Auran profile/email if it's a download version), then it means you may have a potentially dodgy version.

You may also wish to read the Code of Conduct.
