All I can say is beware N3V... Constant replacing a game and causing people's content that they are paying money for to grow obsolete is dangerous. Customers will eventually get tired of buying the same thing over and over just because the game was reissued the next year and they can't use the virtual motors they bought 2 years ago. You have a great game but you aren't the Madden series either. I can see 3 years and reissue but not every year. I would bet on customers walking like they did over the DLS fiasco not to long ago.

Apparently Richard you haven't been with the Trainz community or products since the beginning. For the most part older content works perfectly fine in the newer versions of Trainz. The older content needs updating, mostly due to the changes in the error reporting, but it still works once those errors have been resolved. In fact there has been an ongoing repair process to bring much of the older content, we're talking about 10 year-old content, up-to-date so to future proof the assets so that future generations can enjoy the same content we are using today.

I have Trainz on the iPad, I bought it as at 99p at that price it's worth having a look to see what i'ts like. I really believe it is simply an introduction to the main PC product. The youngsters that buy mobile Trainz will want the real thing as they get older. The iPad version is devoid of most of the sophisification of TS12 and naturally would only appeal to the younger end. At some point saturation point is reached with the iPad version as there will always be limitations on the mobile versions as there are with laptops compared to desktops and people will always want something new and once they've seen Trainz they will not want it again.
I could never envisage the end of the desktop PC especially in business as the iPad etc do not multi task which is essential in the real world. Mobile devises have their place which are for functions on the move. When you return to base
the PC is far more efficient to use. I remember 15 years ago laptop users were provided with docking stations as laptops were not ergonomically acceptable to the Health and Safety Director in our company.
I therefore see no need for concern.

Hi Everybody.
I would agree with Ken green in stating that there will always a place for the PC in the workplace office. Throughout the world the PC is the backbone of all company systems and will continue to be into the foreseeable future. Therefore, as long as PCs continue to be produced there will always be available components and upgrades for the games market.

With regard to and upgrade for trainz (trainz 2013) that I do not feel is necessary at this point in time. Trainz is a simulator for of the hobbyist, users who wish to create their own routes or other content and therefore consistency is the main concern of the user group who do not wish to see changes to the core engine that make their hours of dedication not usable because of an upgrade.

By comparison Trainz main competitor Railworks seems to have moved in the direction of what you may call the “light user”. That would be the user that wishes to just drive the consists in the game or create scenarios (settings in Trainz) and not indulge in creating content or routes perhaps for the reasons of time or dedication. Railworks has a further upgrade available this week. However, as most of its content creators are professional software houses almost all of the content will be upgraded on the launch day or shortly after based on past experience.

Therefore, the users of the two simulator are very different people I feel , and therefore N3V probably have the best policy for its user base. Game simulators are niche markets and Trainz is for the most dedicated hobbyist . Therefore it should stay where it is and leave the flash graphics and high priced payware content to a different user base that request such things in their lighter use of the other rail simulator.

I meant multi-task in the same way that Windows works. For example it is not unusual to have 4 or 5 Excel files open at once in two separate instances together with one or two Word files whilst checking on emails in the background and then perhaps check an address or mileage distance on Google while all of the other processes are active so that it is easy to switch between them.

Yeah, the iPad does all that. What you're really saying (i think) is that it doesn't have windows- but then, many Windows users just run everything maximised anyway.

Hi,

All this talk of possible upgrading is surely speculation, I for one would like to see Trainz improve the appearance of the simulator and move away from what I call washed out colours.

The colors are not washed out on my setup. It could be your monitor or GPU, or settings on your GPU.

Yes, exactly, and I don't disagree that it's useful. But that isn't multitasking, that's windowing. For better or for worse, Apple prefers you to focus on one app at a time, and swap apps when you want to change focus (equivalent to alt-tab or the task bar in Windows.) Everything you list above is still possible on an iPad, just not all visible on the one screen at the same time.

As Robert pointed out, that could be your GPU or screen. Try turning up the vibrance on your GPU. One of the reasons I still use a CRT is because most LCDs look really washed-out to me.

I use a CRT display, and the colors are great. With LCD, the black levels are not that good, and the color gamut is iffy depending on the design of the LCD panels and the back lighting. I looked at a Flight sim on an LCD monitor and it was terrible, compared to how it looks on my CRT monitor. Don't forget. LCD monitors come in different qualities, and you really have to compare the side by side to see the difference. The entry level monitors are usually pretty poor quality.

Whether or not the iPad can multi-task or not is to a certain extent irrelevant. It is just not efficient enough to use compared to a Desktop PC. It is ok for casual use but for heavy duty use it's abysmal. Anything other than a simple spreadsheet takes for ever to create it is easier to create the file on a laptop and transfer it for reference (that's what I do) Word is slightly better but is still very clunky. The keyboards on mobile devices are not built for input you are forever changing mode for the different characters. As far as spreadsheets are concerned a numeric keyboard is essential.
This thread has become 'Why Tablets will not replace Desktop PCs in business' which is a bit off topic but nevertheless interesting.

I had a 32" CRT TV once and it weighed 140ibs. What size monitor do you use and what definition is it.?

A laptop screen, depending on the angle can distort the colours but I've had flat panel screens for about 8 years and I find the colour superb. There are plenty of adjustments so there is no excuse for poor colour.
TV screens would also suffer if there were no colour settings.

You need to try TS12. This version can not in any way be described as washed out. TS2010 was not quite a bright but still not washed out.
If you really mean washed out it must be your colour settings.
