Trying to Understand Layers

Trainz Luvr since 2004
I just installed TS2010 the other day so layers are completely new to me.

I've imported a route that has UTM tiles, track, signals, and other scenery objects but is no where near finished. Can I now use the layer tool to lock down the UTM tiles by themselves? Or do can I only lock down all the work I've completed so far?

If you have only one route and session layer, then you can only lock down all the work you completed so far?

regards

When you exported with TransDem your UTM tiles should go into their own layer, I tend to do both ortho photos and Google maps as UTM tiles so I actually put each in their own layer so I can hide one while viewing the other etc.

But yes the UTM tiles should be in their own layer I can't remember off the top of my head what it's called, but they should be in their own layer and you can lock them.

Now this is assuming that you made the route and that it is truly a 2010 route created with TransDem. If not you're at the mercy of whoever created the route but if I recall correctly you have TransDem :-) so that's what I was assuming anyway that this was one of your routes

Yes it's my route but I made it with 2009 and no layers. I guess that's what I'm asking. Now that it's in 2010 with the layer feature can I isolate UTM tiles in their own layer? It sounds like you have to use layers and you build your route from the beginning.

I do :-) which is why I don't normally do anything for any version earlier than 2010.

What you would have to do is remove all the UTM tiles from your route, but they would still be in the object manager, then create a layer and get in that layer and start placing them again on the map that way they would be in that particular layer selected. I don't know of any way other than that to do it, but you might ask Roland, because if it was made with TransDem for 2009 he might know a way to merge the two together and make it work.

I might be able to manage it moving forward. I'm thinking save it as is as a layer then add the very small detailed scenery I was having some issues with. Then I can merge both layers back together.

Do you think the UTM Tiles should be in there own layer?
I didn't quite catch it would you mind repeating it a few more times..:hehe::p

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I have my route up in game. I selected the layers tab then add new layer and named it. Then I locked it. I can still move all the scenery on my route. Isn't this the idea of layers to lock things down so they can't be moved by accident?

If you click on the oval eye in the layer panel it will hide all the assets in that layer. Click the eye again to show the assets again.

You can move an asset from one layer to another by selecting the properties button ( question mark ) and in the top right corner, select the layer you want to move the asset to.

Locking a layer will only lock assets on that layer, so move the scenery into the layer that you want to lock. I think it will only move if the sending and receiving layers are both unlocked

Does this clear things up?

Absolutely, I always put them in separate layers. Let's say I take a route that I'm building in TransDem, I want 500 foot ortho photos, 1500 foot ortho photos, 5000 foot ortho photos as well as a good set of Google maps at 17 zoom.

I can save each one of those to its own layer, and then switch them on and off in surveyor as I need them and lock them so that I can place objects on top of them without them moving. Layers have actually made using TransDem and UTM tiles extremely fun considering what you can do with them.

I wouldn't do it any other way and matter of fact I don't build routes for anything earlier than 2010 for that reason because you're so limited as to what you can do with your UTM tiles.

Thanks guys. I got it figured out now. I didn't realize you had to save the route or session after making the layer feature changes.
Once you have it figured out it is a nice tool and pretty easy to use. I can see how newbies to layers are getting confused though.
